  1. Pamphlet on nuclear fusion & fission & radioactivity What is nuclear fusion & fission? • Fission in Latin is "fissus" which means "Split“ • In Fission an Atom is split into two smaller atoms, but the two • new atoms have less mass than the original one, the missing • mass transforms to energy. • Fusion is the opposite of Fission means "Combine“In Fusion Two smaller atoms collide and combine to make a • new atom. During Fusion some amount of mass becomes • energy just as Einstein predicted. E = m c² Nuclear fusion Nuclear fusion Image from: http://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Nuclear-Waste.jpg

  2. Pamphlet on nuclear fusion & fission & radioactivity What is radioactivity? Radioactivity refers to the particles which are emitted from nuclei as a result of nuclear instability. Because the nucleus experiences the intense conflict between the two strongest forces in nature, it should not be surprising that there are many nuclear isotopes which are unstable and emit some kind of radiation. 4. How radiation are transmitted? • When the radiation is transmitted through the crystal surface, it excites the metal film, causing surface plasmon resonance. Any molecules bound to this gold surface with dipole moments of their own cause perturbations in the plasmon resonance, causing absorption at wavelengths other than that which is characteristic of the metal film. The remaining IR radiation is scattered back into the crystal, where it may be directed to the detector. The gold film acts as an amplifier at the surface of the crystal, increasing the surface specificity of the this technique. Source from: http://chemgroups.ucdavis.edu/~land/ATR.html

  5. Effects of Radiation Exposure on Human Health • Radioactivity is dangerous. It may cause skin burns; it may destroy good tissues and what it may cause can be passed on to our children and grandchildren. In case of exposure it may even cause death. • first signs of radiation sickness including: • nausea • vomiting • headache • some loss of white blood cells • Source from: http://library.thinkquest.org/3471/radiation_effects_body.html

  6. Radioactive iodine • There was needed to curtail a worse leak from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. • In all, about 11,500 tons of radioactive water that has collected at the nuclear facility will be dumped into the sea, as workers also try to deal with a crack that has been a conduit for contamination. • http://articles.cnn.com/2011-04-04/world/japan.nuclear.reactors_1_radioactive-water-fuel-pool-tokyo-electric-power?_s=PM:WORLD
