  1. Warm Up • Today’s warm up is to get your spiral and table of contents up to date. • Page 1- Safety Contract • Page 2 – Safety Logo Notes • Page 3 – Blank (for now) • Page 4 – ABC Assignment • Page 5 – Scientific Method Flipbook • Page 6 – Scientific Method Notes

  2. Choose 5 careers that you would be interested in • Homework Tonight: • Highlight/circle/ or underline 5 careers you’d be most interested in. • Print 5 pictures of those 5 careers and write why you are interested in that career choice. • This will go on page 3 in your notebooks.

  3. The methods of Science • Turn to page 6 in your Spiral • Write the learning goal at the top of the page (small) • Write the following critical question below the learning target. • The answer to this question will go on the top of the paper on page 5 • How do scientists answer questions and solve problems? The Scientific method can be applied to ANY testable questions! NOT JUST SCIENCE QUESTIONS!

  4. ANY TESTABLE QUESTION!! Why didn’t my boyfriend or girlfriend meet me after class? Why is there so much traffic around 7:00 in the morning? Why does an iPad block charge an iPhone faster than a smaller charging block? If I post a selfie on instagram in the morning it will get more likes. If I give Coach K some starburst will the amount of homework decrease? Why does my hair fall flat before 3rd period?

  5. Scientific Method Sort • With a partner sort the cards in the order you think is the scientific method • Leave them in that order! You’ll get time to fix it later

  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7sSuhQ1_24 • Big Bang Theory • Scientific Method For example Leonard made an observation and proposed a question Formed a Hypothesis. If I ask Wolowitz a question, then he will relate it back to the space center Designed/Tested the experiment “Where should we go eat?” Further Research Sheldon tested the hypothesis They came to a conclusion He relates everything back to the space center

  7. The methods of science Science Hypothesis • Is a process that uses observation and investigation to • gain knowledge about the world around us • educated guess or testable prediction Format: If I do __________ , then ___________ (will happen), because ________. Experiment A procedure to validate or refute a hypothesis

  8. For Example • Observation: • My boyfriend (or girlfriend) did not meet me after class • Hypothesis: • If I take the long way to the gym thenmy boyfriend (or girlfriend) won’t meet me after class, becauseit will make him late. • Experiment: • Take the normal way to the gym, take a short route to the gym, and take a long route to the gym

  9. In experiments you will have variables Independent Variable Dependent Variable • Part of an experiment that is purposely changedIndependent – I changed • Part of the experiment that is observed because of the independent variable; part of the experiment that is & measured Control Variable The part of the experiment that remains unchanged throughout & Constants The part of the experiment that remains similar in both groups

  10. Experiment Continued • Independent Variable: • The route I took to the gym • Dependent Variable: • the amount of time it took to get to the gym • Control: • The normal route taken • Constants or Control : • the location (school), my mode of transportation to the gym (I walked.. Didn’t run…skip…hop…skateboard)

  11. You water three sunflower plants with salt water. Each plant receives a different concentration (amount) of salt solutions. A fourth plant receives pure water. After a two-week period, the height of the plants are measured. • Ind. Variable amount of salt in solution • Dep. Variable height of the plant • Control Group (or variable) plants receiving water only

  12. Propose a question Research (to become educated) Form a hypothesis (educated guess) Design and Perform Experiment Gather and Analyze Data Further Research(Was your hypothesis right or wrong?) Conclusion Scientific Method Card sortDo you need to rearrange anything?

  13. Hypothesis lead to theories Scientific Theory Scientific Law • Well tested hypothesis • that are explanations based on scientific experiments • Ex: Cell Theory • A rule or summary of theories that describe patterns in nature, but don’t explain why they happen • Laws can be measured, theories cannot • Ex: Law of Gravity Hypothesis is an educated guess or testable question Theory is a well tested hypothesis that has been repeatedly verified Law is a summary of multiple theories that describe patterns in nature

  14. Flip Book • Fold the paper hamburger style • Write the steps of the scientific method AND your OWN EXPERIMENT EXAMPLE!!!!! • Write what the step is on the inside of the book • Then paste it into your spiral on page 5
