  1. LEP Pilot : Community Practicumsby: Marta M. Miranda, L.C.S.W.3/03/04

Purpose of Practicums • To provide opportunities for the development and practice of: • Spanish Language Skills • Access to Latino/Hispanic culture • Application of language and cultural competency skills • Increased interaction with hispanic/Latino clients • Gain knowledge of community resources

  3. Crucial Components of Community Practicums • Placement in a community agency/center whose primary clients are Hispanic/Latino • A bilingual/bicultural mentor • Weekly support/supervisions groups • Hours in practicums: 12 to 16 hours weekly.

  4. Current Plan • Practicum Supervisors for Pilot Regions are: Sue Cambell for Jefferson, Sandra Schiele and Kinitha Pena for Kypda rural. • Identify community partners/agencies that are willing to serve as practicum cites and mentors • Schedule meeting in pilot region to discuss/design practicum specifics.

  5. Cont. of current plan • Practicum cites identified for Jefferson Catholic Charities Kentucky Refugee Ministries Americana Community Center Center for Women and Children Next steps: Sue will contact key persons & invite to community meeting/focus group facilitated by Marta Miranda.

  6. Cont. of current plan • Practicum cites identified for Kypda rural Latino Coalition OVEC Health Dept. Family resource centers • Next steps: Kinitha and Sandra to key persons and invite to community meeting/focus group facilitated by Marta Miranda.

  7. Pending Issues • Start date for the Spanish Language Training Program (Domestic Immersion ) • Hiring of interim coverage staff • Performance/Proficiency Testing of newly identified staff • Scheduling of LEP Cultural Competency Training for staff in the Domestic Immersion program • Budget and new administration approval/concerns • Input and discussion with KIIS regarding coordination of classes and practicum curriculum.
