DCT-2000 Wireless Multimedia Application • Basic Requirement: Enable the high-speed, wireless interconnection of consumer devices to support the transfer of large multi-media data files and high speed, real-time data streams. • Applications: • Video distribution from set-top boxes to remote TV sets • In-home Internet connectivity from set-top boxes to personal devices and computers • Wireless video camera linkages • Wireless Audio and Video distribution for Home Theater Systems

Application Requirements Overall System • System Operation: Half Duplex, symmetrical, isochronous operation that supports real-time multimedia • Multi-mode Protocol Support: • 20 Mbps operation in High-rate mode, • BlueTooth1 compliant operation in 1 Mbps mode • Operating Frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ISM bands (Unlicensed operation) • RF Range / Coverage: 10 to 15 meters in the home environment

Application Requirements Overall System • Number of channels: 7 minimum • Security: System level compatibility with WAP cellular protocols, internet E-Commerce protocols, etc • Cost Targets: $10 U.S. BOM cost in 2001 for high volume production • Low Power: Suitable for use in portable, battery operated equipment • Complexity Use proven, existing technology consistent and Development with the performance and price goals of the Risk: Personal Area Networking space

Application Requirements Physical Layer • Channel Data Rate: 20 Mbits / sec min. • Number of channels: 7 minimum (20Mbps ea.) • Channel Noise Immunity • Error Tolerance: FEC capable of correcting a 0.1% BER • Delay Spread Tolerance: 100 Nanoseconds • Security: Assurance of privacy and prevention of theft-of-service • Co-existence / compatibility: Compatibility with other protocols operating in the same band • Operating frequency / 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ISM bands licensing requirements: (Unlicensed operation)

Application Requirements MAC Layer • QOS Support for multiple ( 3 or more) streams of real-time video plus three voice channels and an internet traffic channel Support for up six high fidelity audio channels plus one real-time video channel • Security Upper level support for implementation of WAP cellular protocols, internet E-Commerce protocols, etc • Complexity and Complexity consistent with the low cost Cost and power drain goals of the Personal Area Networking space • Low Development risk If possible, use an existing and proven MAC layer to reduce risk and shorten the time to market
