  2. The slides themselves • You will notice each of these symbols in the upper right corner of every page. • This bar will take you back to the beginning • The purple arrow will take you back to the previous slide • The biege arrow will take you to the next slide

  3. Other buttons • Some slides will use other buttons so that you can move between slides, to the next step, or cause various other actions to occur. • These slides will explain the action associated with the button, but always try them out, chances are they have a purpose! Yes, even these!

  4. Hyperlinks http://www.msu.edu/ • The other thing you will see are hyperlinks, that will take you to web sites. • If you click these, you will be opening a web browser.   6. How do I use this? This is the home slide, from here you can get to the other parts of the project.   12. Descriptive words are oftenadjectives. Adjectives are words that tell us information about, or modify, nouns; things like… how many which one what kind and/or any other words that help us know more about the subject. Dictionary.com Definition

  13. Adverbs are another type of descriptor. Adverbs modify, or change, any verb, adjective, or other adverb Often adverbs answer the questions how, when, where, or to what extent Dictionary.com Definition

  25. Why describe? 1. To add interest to your writing 2. Offer variety to the reader 3. Help the reader create a picture, or see a picture, from your writing Press these to look at examples.

  26. Adds interest, hmmm… The dog was barking. Where is the interest? Wouldn’t you like to know more? Whose dog? What kind of bark? Add some adjectives and look at the difference. Jenny’s giant bull dog was barking viciously!

  27. Variety is the spice of life. The brown tree was tall. In the forest there were many brown trees. Most of the trees were tall. Good information but man am I bored! Add a few adjectives, and descriptive words, let us see the different trees! The rusty brown tree was taller than a house. The huge forest was filled with trees; Maples, Oaks, even a few Birch trees. All of the trees were at least forty feet tall.

  28. Show, don’t tell! Use adjectives and descriptive words to build a picture for your readers; give them details! The room was destroyed by the fire. Do the words above describe the picture that appears when you click the dragon?

  30. Here are my words for the fire. The large room was filled with scorched debris. All the windows were smashed, and the charred window sills matched the blackened walls. Nothing was spared by the destructive heat. Everything, big and small, valuable and worthless, all of it was destroyed. All of the yellow words are descriptive words - adjectives and adverbs.

  31. Now for some practice! Look at the following slides. Use adjectives and adverbs to help you write three descriptive sentences for each picture. The next slide is a quick review. After that choose the picture you find interesting.
