  3. What is AVID? • A = Advancement • V = Via • I = Individual • D = Determination AVID stands for: AVID is offered in grades 7th – 12th as an elective class

  4. AVID = College Prep

  5. AVID teaches Organization! • All AVID students must keep a 3-inch binder • All AVID students learn how to take Cornell Notes • Organization = Success!

  6. AVID offers free Tutoring! College Tutors are a big part of AVID Tutors come to the AVID classroom every Tuesday and Thursday Students are expected to bring higher level questions to class each Tue/Thur. Support is offered in any subject

  7. AVID teaches & supports… • Writing • Inquiry • Collaboration • Organization • Reading

  8. AVID offers field trips • To explore colleges/universities and • To learn leadership skills

  9. AVID supports students through rigorous courses • All AVID students must take at least one rigorous course (Pre-AP, AP, IB or Dual)

Who are AVID students? • B/C students • Must pass STAAR test • Good attendance/discipline • Must be willing to take at least one rigorous course • First generation college student • Free/reduced lunch • Historically underrepresented in college • Special circumstances Must have Desire and Determination to go to college In addition, students must meet at least one of the following criteria:

How do I get in AVID? • You must turn in an AVID application (signed by you and a parent/guardian • Turn in the application to your teacher no later than January 23rd. • Complete the written interview (attached to your application) • You will be interviewed by an AVID teacher or site team member sometime in February 2014. • You will be notified by letter in March if you are accepted.
