History of iPods • Invented by Tony Fadell • Fadell wanted to deliver a small hard drive-based player, unlike the bulky flash memory-based MP3 players from other companies. • After being turned down by RealNetworks and Phillips, Fadell found support for his project with Apple. • The first iPod came out in October 2001.

Topic Today: “Racetrack” memory • Mobile phones, iPods and other consumer devices may soon be able to hold a hundred times more information than they do at present thanks to a breakthrough in storage technology. • The chip is called “racetrack" memory and it involves using the "spin" of an electron to store data • The technology is similar to flash memory in that it has no moving parts and is unlikely to mechanically malfunction. • "racetrack" memory won't be in stores until around 2018
