  1. Automated Vacuum Bake-Out Station

  2. Team Members • Taiyoh Afrik • Chad Conner • Lee Groeneweg • Michael Jourden • Colleen Koperski

  3. Presentation Overview • Objectives • Mechanical Design • Process Control and Data Acquisition • System Features • Budget • Schedule

  4. Objectives • Automate the existing manual bake-out process. • Design a data acquisition system to gather pressure and temperature data from the bake-out process. • Design adjustable fixturing to hold varying sizes of catalytic converters.

  5. Mechanical Design Fixture • Aluminum base plate • Retractable fixturing - shells and heat blower • Manifold for compressed air • Cooling Ring • Air Amplifier

  6. 3-D Model of Fixture (heating)

  7. 3-D Model of Fixture (cooling)

  8. Process Control and Data Acquisition • LabView, used for the process control and data acquisition systems. • National Instruments (NI4351) DAQ card, for thermocouple inputs. • 14 thermocouple inputs with signal conditioning built into the board. • 8 digital TTL I/O

  9. Process Control and Data Acquisition (continued) • National Instruments (PCI-6024E) DAQ card, used for all other inputs and outputs. • 16 analog inputs • 2 analog outputs • 8 digital TTL I/O

  10. Control System Features • System will have an emergency stop button. • Vacuum pump is shut off • Heat blower and radiant heaters are turned off • Vacuum shut off valve is activated • Variable set points for process temperature and pressure through LabView. • Electrical enclosure will have quick connects for thermocouples.

  11. Pressure Gauges • 2 pressure gauges required for measurements over large range of vacuum pressures. • Range 1: Atmosphere to 10-3 torr. • PS216 from MKS Instruments • Range 2: 10-3 - 10-5 torr. • PS205 from MKS Instruments

  12. Heat Blower • Leister “Hot Wind S” • Fixed 12 CFM • Heat up to 800 degrees Celsius • Power: 2850 Watts • Source: 220VAC • With the optional digital controller, the temperature of the Hot Wind S can be remotely controlled by an analog signal.

  13. Budget

  14. Schedule • Parts will be ordered during the week of April 21, 2000. • Building of the fixturing will begin May 8, 2000 and be completed by June 9, 2000. • The control system will be built and wired beginning on May 8, 2000, and will be completed by June 23, 2000.

  15. Schedule (continued) • Final system debugging is scheduled to be completed July 10, 2000. • Test parts will be run starting July 11, 2000, and continue until the system is functioning correctly. • VBO station presented for approval by August 4, 2000. • Final product delivered upon approval.
