  1. Nature of Science The Scientific Method Reading: Chapter 1 pgs2 - 28

  2. Important Vocab • Nature of science • Science • Observation • Data • Hypothesis • Dependent/Independent Variable • Theory • Characteristics of life • Homeostasis • Metabolism • Cells • Evolution • Measurements • Metric system • Light microscope • Electron microscope

  3. Problems and Questions • Scientific theories and knowledge all start with problems or questions about observations in our natural world ?

  4. Solving problems with prior knowledge • What do you already know?

  5. Hypothesis • A working model of how your idea might work

  6. Questioning Spontaneous generation and developing a new Hypothesis

  7. There always seems to be flies on the meat before the maggots… Francesco Redi New Hypothesis: Maggots don’t appear unless there are flies first Experiment -A test designed to gather data that will either support or disprove a hypothesis

  8. Variables • Independent variable – a factor in a controlled experiment that is changed • ____________________________________ • Dependent variable – the thing that is going to change because of the independent variable • The appearance of maggots or not Experimental group Control group

  9. Time Time Experimental group Control group

  10. How do you get from here to here?

  11. Science • A way of knowing things • A process that takes a question or a problem and offers an answer or solution • This solution is always subject to change or be proved false when new data is collected I believe that I can add to Reni’s idea. Cloudy Not Cloudy LazzaroSpallanzani

  12. Now that we know about microorganisms there is still more to this idea Curved Neck: Microorganisms can’t travel through Broth Louis Pasteur

  13. Boil it and Leave it Break protective stem

  14. Behold!!!! Pasteurization

  15. Planning an experiment to collect data • What types of data to I want to collect? • units • How will I collect that data? • Reasonable materials list • How will I control the experiment and the variables? • How will I keep my dependent variable from being influenced by things other than my independent variable • How will I present my findings? Needs an example of a controlled experiemtn

  16. Data Types • Quantitative – actual numbers • Qualitative - descriptions or observations Measure Mass (mg, g, kg) Measure Volume (liters, ml) Measure distance (mm, cm, m, km)

  17. Heaviest Heavier Mass is always the same Heavy In outer space Weight = 0

  18. Problem that needs to be solved Suggested solution (hypothesis) Prior knowledge Evidence does not support Develop a method for gathering evidence (experiment) Theory presented along with evidence Evidence supports
