Background • In 2006 FEMA, CT DPH & CT DEMHS visited Child Care Providers in EPZ • DPH developed an all hazards emergency preparedness program – won Governor’s Service Award • State child care licensing requires minimal emergency planning • EPZ child care facilities • Centers/group – 50 (23 > 50 children) • Family “6 packs” - 76

  3. Outreach Objective • To increase the child care providers’ knowledge and understanding of their role in emergency preparedness and response to local, regional, and statewide emergencies. • Specific briefing on nuclear power plant emergencies and CT’s RERP.

  4. Outreach Program • PowerPoint presentation - "Child Care Safety & Crisis Response for the Child Care Provider" • All hazards • Millstone planning info • Sample plans • EMD contact info • Emergency go-kit info 

  5. Participants/Attendees • Child Care Center/Group Home providers (directors, staff) • Family Child Care providers • Local Emergency Management Directors • CT DPH • CT DEMHS • Millstone • FEMA Region 1

  6. Resources/Handouts • Binder – sample plan, contact info, etc… • “To-go kit” rolling crate • FEMA “Ready Kids” & Sesame Street “Let’s Get Ready!” guide • Emergency Care Guidelines – flip chart • Pens – “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”

Results • Child care providers in the EPZ learned about planning and preparedness for Millstone emergencies. • Child care providers encouraged to work with Emergency Management Directors in developing their emergency plans. • Participants received training credit! • Positive feedback “Wonderful! Can’t wait to share with families.” • Next Outreach Program March 2009.
