  2. What is ATP? • Contains sugar ribose • Acts as immediate source of energy that powers cellular work • One of the nucleoside triphosphates used to make RNA

  3. 3 kinds of work in a cell • Chemical work- pushing of endergonic reactions that would not occur spontaneously • Transport work- the pumping of substances across membranes against the direction of spontaneous movement • Mechanical work- the contraction of muscle cells, and the movement of chromosomes during cellular reproduction

  4. ATP to ADP • Hydrolysis breaks bonds • Addition of water molecule • Molecule of inorganic phosphate leaves ATP

  5. How ATP is used • Transports chemical energy within cells • One end product of cellular respiration • Used by enzymes and proteins in many cellular processes (cell division) • Energy released is greater than the energy most molecules could deliver • Release of energy heats surrounding environment. EX: (shivering)

  6. How ATP is used cont… • Heat alone is an inefficient use of valuable energy resource • Proteins harness energy to perform the 3 types of cellular work (chemical, transport, and mechanical) • Transport and mechanical work are almost always powered by the hydrolysis of ATP

  7. Regeneration of ATP • Addition of phosphate to ADP • ATP cycle- shuttling of inorganic phosphate and energy • Couples energy-yielding processes to energy consuming ones • Free energy must be spent to make it occur • Regeneration of ATP from ADP is endergonic (energy consuming)
