  1. 6 µm 60 µm 60 nm Formation of Vanadium Oxide NanotubesM. Stanley Whittingham, (SUNY), DMR 0705657 • Vanadium oxide can be formed in a range of morphologies, which exhibit different physical and chemical properties. The nanotubes (VONTs) have scroll morphology, and can undergo redox reactions. When completely oxidized, they are planar. They thus open up the opportunity of using an electrochemical reaction to role and un-role the VONTs; such behavior would enable a nano mechanical activator. • We are building an understanding of the formation and redox reactions, and correlating the physical properties with the structure. b) a) c)

  2. Toxicity of Vanadium Oxide NanotubesM. Stanley Whittingham, (SUNY), DMR 0705657 An issue with nanomaterials is their possible toxiciity. Collaboration with biologists has provided information about the cytotoxicity of vanadium oxide nanotubes. Compared to bulk vanadium pentoxide and the layer structure precursor, the nanotubes appear to do significantly more damage to cells. This is most likely the result of their nano size and long tubular shape, not their chemical composition. Vanadium oxide nanotubes.
