  2. 26th lesson

  3. Romans 15:4 (NKJV) 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

  4. 1 Corinthians 10:1111  Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

  5. James 5:17... 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

  6. Potiphar’s Wife

  7. Potiphar’s Wife: the Bored Housewife? Genesis 39

  8. What to do when sin is at the door!

  9. Potiphar’s Wife Looked in a Direction She Shouldn’t Have • “And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, ‘Lie with me.’” (v.7)

  10. Potiphar’s Wife Looked in a Direction She Shouldn’t Have • God has a different opinion. • Any sexual expression that takes place outside the boundaries of the marriage relationship is either fornication or adultery. • Either one is a sin against God, your spouse, your future spouse, or yourself, • V. 9; 1 Cor. 6:18-20. • Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife was a response we should all adopt when it comes to dealing with sexual sin, v. 12; 2 Tim. 2:22.

  11. Potiphar’s Wife Looked in a Direction She Shouldn’t Have • Joseph’s master trusted him (v. 4) • Joseph was in the wife’s orbit, every day (v. 10) • Joseph refused her, but she kept finding reasons to cross his path, fueling her temptation (v. 10)

  12. Potiphar’s Wife Looked in a Direction She Shouldn’t Have • What does God say about being careful with our eyes and thoughts? • Philippians 4:8; 1 John 2:16; Matthew 5:28 Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) 8  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. 1 John 2:16 (NKJV) 16  For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. Matthew 5:28 (NKJV) 28  But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  13. Potiphar’s Wife Pursued An Obsession that was Harmful • “So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.” (v.10)

  14. Potiphar’s Wife Pursued An Obsession that was Harmful • She pushed him to get what she wanted • He refused her, repeatedly, but she was persistent • Her obsession escalated from just looking, to asking, to physical pressure

  15. Let me make a statement or two about this matter of temptation. 1. Temptation is never from God - James 1:13 2. Temptation is always from within - James 1:14-15 3. There is always a way out of Temptation – 1 Cor. 10:13 (How?) a. Deal with it Immediately – Nip it in the bud! b. Deal with it Realistically - Get away from it at all costs. c. Deal with it Heartlessly – Do whatever it takes to avoid it. d. Deal with it Consistently - Learn to be consistent in your resistance. Deal with it Confidently - We have the Lord’s great promise in 1 Cor. 10:13. God will make a way of escape, just be sure you look for it! Those temptations that we cannot escape, He will enable us to “bear” them. God’s promise to us is that while temptations will come our way, He will enable us to land safely on the other side.)

  16. Potiphar’s Wife Pursued An Obsession that was Harmful • What does God say about temptation? • 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22; James 4:7; 2 Peter 2:9 2 Timothy 2:22 (NKJV) 22  Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. James 4:7 (NKJV) 7  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 2 Peter 2:9 (NKJV) 9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, 1 Timothy 6:11 (NKJV) 11  But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

  17. Potiphar’s Wife Enacted a Vicious Revenge When Thwarted • “And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, 14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.” (v.16-18)

  18. Potiphar’s Wife Enacted a Vicious Revenge When Thwarted • Joseph refused her advances, and fled • Humiliated, she invented a lie to tell her husband • Joseph was thrown into prison, making her revenge complete

  19. Potiphar’s Wife Enacted a Vicious Revenge When Thwarted • What does God say about bitterness and revenge? • Ephesians 4:31; James 3:14; Romans 12:19 Romans 12:19 (NKJV) 19  Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. James 3:14 (NKJV) 14  But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. Ephesians 4:31 (NKJV) 31  Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

  20. What Can We Learn from Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife • Potiphar’s Wife • Trusted in her own beauty • Did not respect her husband, Joseph, or herself • Ultimately did not get what she wanted

  21. What Can We Learn from Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife • Joseph • Trusted in God (v. 9) • Respected his position and his employer (v. 8) • Ultimately was blessed by God in prosperity and posterity (v. 23)

  22. Potiphar’s Wife: Not a good wife, and not a good example to be imitated.
