Why We Care ~ • Because it is what we do – without students, we don’t exist!  • Only 27.5% of WV adults over 25 have a college degree – Nationally that number is 41.1% (source – WV HEPC) • By 2018 – Over 49% of all WV jobs will require a college degree or certificate (post-secondary training) (source – Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce) • In WV that means in 7 short years, we will need 20,000 MORE people with post-secondary training to meet our workforce needs (source – Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce) ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

Classified Employees Can Help • Classified employees are not traditionally the first thing that comes to mind when you hear student retention • BUT – we interact DAILY with students – dining halls, residence halls, department administrative support… • We have VITAL relationships with students • Financial Aid • Admissions • Scheduling • Tutoring • Supervising student workers • Graduation and others ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

  4. Classified Employees Can Help • It has been said that Relationships = Retention Classified employees are already developing those relationships in the dining hall, residence halls, academic departments, work study, financial aid…. ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

Classified Employees Can Help • Sometimes we are the FACULTY – we teach • Sometimes we are the STUDENT – we learn • Many of us have some college or technical training but didn’t finish • In a 2006 ACCE survey of 1438 classified employees, almost 500 people said they have some college or technical training after high school but no degree ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

What ACCE is doing • Created a Student Retention and Educate WV subcommittee • Let HEPC know that we want to help • HEPC invited an ACCE member to be part of The College Completion Task Force – a group who is developing a College Completion Agenda • Made this part of ACCE’s message in presentations/discussions with HEPC, CCTC, LOCEA ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

What ACCE is doing • We continue to talk about educating our own • Such as a classification system to have career ladders where classified employees can see how to advance themselves; can see what training or credentials needed to move up • Then having a system that will allow employees to advance once they receive additional training/credentials • Looking at doing a survey of all classified employees to gather ideas and more data on our own credentials ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

  8. Some suggestions on how you can help • Set the tone – • You are a leader on your campus. Classified employees need to hear they are an important part of solving the college completion problem in WV • Talk, Talk, Talk – make this a regular part of your staff council meetings • Invite someone from your provost, academic support or others to speak • Talk, Talk, Talk again – • Talk to your President/administration and BOG about educating our own • Make sure they know employees want to help • Ask to be part of the solution – • Request that a classified employee be on student retention or other committees ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

Additional suggestions • Advocate for educating our own - • Work with your President/administration and BOG’s to develop programs aimed at classified employees - get creative - perhaps services for faculty or traditional students can be available to staff (daycare, career counseling, tutoring, etc) • Work with your HR to identify classified employees who need only a few hours for a degree/certificate then reach out & encourage them • Perhaps develop a staff council program to celebrate classified employees who have attained degrees/certificates each year ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011

More suggestions • Be the student – consider obtaining additional training/degree • Develop those relationships with students, find out their name, ask how their doing – make them feel that everyone wants them to succeed • If you come across a student who might be struggling, speak up to them or point it out to someone else • Other Ideas???   11. Final Thought We have all heard the saying "it takes a village to raise a child” Maybe it can be said that “it takes a WHOLE state to improve college completion in WV” It is so important to WV’s future and is ALL of our business. ACCE Leadership Conference June 2011
