  3. Sequence • Two approaches: • Classic approach to editing: • Establish location and characters and then give details • This may be reversed. • Contemporary approach to editing: • Build space out of a series of close-ups • More intense, well suited to small scale projects.

Frame mobility • Panning / whip pan • Mimic eye looking around • Tilting • Horizontal can emphasis height • Downward, slow reveal • Tracking: forward, backward, diagonally, circular side-to-side • Build anticipation as it reveals off screen space • Create continuous space (instead of transitions or cuts).

Scenes & transitions • The shot in AE is the length of time before a change in framing. • Transition is a way of joining or linking your shots together. • Two main types of transitions: optical or cut (cut is the most common) • Mobile Framing, way of changing framing without a cut (sequence shot).

  16. Transitions: The cut A cut or edit is an immediate transition from one shot to the next. You will need to consider how to make cuts flow visually from one shot to the next. Use: • Graphical Match – connect two separate images • Jump Cut – drop frames to create a disjointed effect. • Montage – series of images to create symbolic meaning. • Edit on action – cut on the movement of an object.
