Applications • Go dressed to impress • No flip flops & shorts • Go alone • 1stimpressions are everything! • Completing the app • Watch misspelled names, incomplete phrases or slang, or unreadable handwriting • Use pen • Don’t stain, crease, fold or tear app • Leave no blanks: if question doesn’t apply to you put “not applicable” or N/A • Make sure any reference you use that you asked for their permission first

  3. Applications • Turning in the app • Ask if the manager is available • If not call that afternoon to say you left an application with associate _________ • Hand it to them and introduce yourself • Shake hand give name • Tell them you are in Career Prep • Elective class you receive credit for having a part time job in the community • Ask for an interview • Tell them you would be excited to work for them and would love to interview if they have started conducting them

  4. Waiting Game • We Will Call You!!! • If they say that and 3 days have gone by you call them! • Ask to speak to mgr, introduce yourself, inform them you filled an app and would like to know if they positions still available (because you would like to interview) • If you filled an app online call that same day to let them know and ask for an interview

  5. Interviewing • Show up early • 10 mins • Make sure you get directions night before • Show up alone • Don’t bring friends • If someone gives you a ride, make them wait in car • Show up prepared • Bring a resume if needed, pen, list of references, drivers license, social security card or work permit

  6. During Interview • Dress to impress • Shake interviewers hand and say your name • Sit up straight, but relaxed • Make good eye contact • Don’t fidget • Never say anything negative • Watch slang & “no problem, Uh-huh, like, ya know or ums” • Don’t give just yes or no answers (practice w/ friend or family) • Never ask how much does the job pay! • Do ask about hours or job duties

Interview Questions • Tell me about yourself • Focus on work experience, school, accomplishments or the type of person you are • Why do you want to work here? • You shop there, eat there, want to learn about the industry • What would you do if your replacement was late and you were suppose to go home? • I would stay until they arrived or until one was found • If a customer said something rude what would you do? • I would swallow my pride and ignore it and try to help them to the best of my ability • What do you know about our company? • Make sure you research before you go!

  8. Questions You Can Ask • Would you please describe a typical work day? • Which duties are most important for this job? • How will I be trained for this job? • Would you please describe the ideal employee? • Is their opportunity for growth within the company?

  9. After Interview • Thank the interviewer for their time • Tell them you would love the position & you would like to work for the company • Send a thank you letter or email • If you haven’t heard back from them by the time they said then you call

  11. Things To Do • Make sure voice mail message is appropriate • No call back ring tones • Silly messages • Make sure email address is appropriate • While looking for a job always answer phone politely “ex. John Smith”
