  2. THE SIZE OF THE PROBLEM In Kent there are… • 1,362 child protection plans • 1,568 looked after children • 248 unaccompanied asylum seekers • 83 children in children’s homes • 1,500 children from other LAs • = 2,862 children in the care system • (August 2010)

  3. DMS SCHEME • Created in 2005 • Initially funded by AHKM • To improve support for young people leaving care • Every FE College and University in Kent and Medway involved • Supported by Kent and Medway local authorities

  4. AIMS • To appoint a DMS in every FE and HE partner • To develop support for YCLs • To improve access to education • To improve progression • To raise awareness of staff • To become sustainable

VOICE OF YOUNG PEOPLE Quotes from young care leavers: • ‘Understand our family situation’ • ‘Consider our emotional needs’ • ‘Offer more help with choosing courses’ • ‘Focus on our own issues – NOT what other people think we want!’ • ‘Take time to encourage us’ • ‘Motivate us to achieve our dreams’
