  2. What are chopsticks? • Chopsticks are sticks used in pairs as eating utensils • Chopsticks can be made of wood, gold, silver, ivory, bamboo, or plastic.

  3. The history.. • Chopsticks came from China • Shang dynasty – (1600-1100 BC/BCE) • Chopsticks are used in China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam

  4. How to use them… • First chopstick is placed between the middle of your thumb and your middle finger. • The second chopstick, the top one, is held between the tips of your index finger and thumb. • The top chopstick moves while the bottom does not.

  5. Remember… • Keep the ends of the chopsticks at an even length. • The chopsticks should not cross each other • The bottom chopstick does not move, only the top! • Holding them closer to the top end gives wider range of motion

  6. Chopstick Etiquette • Chopsticks should not be used to pierce food. • Chopsticks should not be vertically stuck into rice bowls, it is symbolism for feeding the dead. • Chopsticks should not be crossed, it is believed to be a bad omen
