  1. IUPUI Academic PlanProgress and AssessmentAugust 2009 IUPUI turns 40 Principal aim is to construct the strongest possible academic program at IUPUI subject to resource constraints, and showcase it aggressively. Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Signature Centers Initiative Excellence in Teaching and Learning Enrollment Shaping Initiative Excellence in Civic Engagement Translating Research into Practice Enhancement of the Resource Base Fundraising Campaign

  2. Dynamic Planning, Steady Implementation 2006-2007 ■ Signature Centers Initiative ■ SRUF – Support for the Recruitment of Under-Represented Faculty ■ Faculty Retention: 3-Year Faculty Reviews Planning without implementation is not a good idea! 2007-2008 ■ Enrollment Shaping Initiative ■ Retention and Graduation ■ TRIP – Translating Research into Practice

  3. Dynamic Planning, Steady Implementation 2008-2009 • RISE to the IUPUI Challenge • Honors College • Shortest Path to Graduation 2009-2010 • Fundraising • Graduate Programs • National Position as a Leading Urban Public Research University Sun RISE

  4. Enrollment Shaping InitiativeImproving Retention and Graduation • Admitted students must be given the best chance for success – low graduation rate severely hurts IUPUI’s national reputation • Increase scope of nationally recognized first year experiences – US News recognition for freshman experience – learning communities, service learning, undergraduate research – if something works, do more of it • Aim for diversity in the graduating class, not just in the entering cohort • Generate educational value and new revenue streams • Stress benefits of timely graduation and academic expectations for success Preparing for timely graduation.

  5. Enrollment Shaping • Conditionally admitted students - free summer preparatory course • High ability students - Bepko, Cox, Presidential scholars - Honors Professional Admissions Program • Out-of state/international students - targeted scholarships - outside RCM • Diversity and need scholarships – Norman Brown [45 scholars @ $2,500], Pell grants, 21st Century Scholars • Continuing education - satellite campuses

  6. Conditionally Admitted Students • Summer Preparatory Program: • Help conditionally admitted students who want to help themselves • $150 K expense - free preparatory Math and English courses for students • Well-received – ICHE, local TV news coverage, students and parents • 2007 – 70 students; 2008 – 180 students; 2009 – 194 students • Good performance at IUPUI • Academic Improvement (continuity) Scholarships – 100 students @ $1500

  7. Undergraduate Non-Resident Credit Hours and Revenues from the Enrollment Shaping Initiative Revenue (in millions of $) ESI particularly valuable in economically challenging times. Great take-off slope of $ 3 million/year. Expect leveling off at about $15 to $20 million.

  8. Schools Getting Most Revenues from the Enrollment Shaping Initiative

  9. Financial Gift Aid Awarded

  10. Campus Housing • Essentially full for two consecutive years • Near campus housing at Park Place • New housing helps recruitment (IPFW, UIndy) • Campus engagement leads to better performance • Students in IUPUI housing get higher grades Ball Residence Hall

  11. Retention and Graduation • Big increase in summer bridge programs, themed learning communities, first year seminars, personal development plans (PDP) • Stress high expectations – students first • Monitoring non-attendance and dismal performance in the first semester; early warning in all gateway courses • Road scholars – 860 students got free parking in Fall 2009 for getting GPA > 3.75 in F08 and S09. • Graduate assistants as advisors, tutors, mentors • New courses, different shorter formats [in late start 8 week courses: 432 students in F06, 981 students in S09] • Degree completion at satellite campus sites • Common theme book project - Deep Economy, Bill McKibben

  12. Tracking the First-Time Full-Time Cohorts • Approximately 2600 first-time full-time students join IUPUI every year • Track these cohorts from year to year to determine retention and graduation rates Informal learning spaces

  13. Retention ▪ One year retention rate for the 2008 cohort is also a new high – expected to reach about 70.5% ▪ Very clear upward trend – slope has increased in the past 3 years A clear signal

  14. Graduation ▪ Six year graduation rate for the 2002 cohort will also hit a new high – expected to be > 33.5% after counting Summer 2009 graduates. A celebration of success

  15. IUPUI graduates challenged to have two or more RISE experiences RISE to the IUPUI Challenge Undergraduate Research International Experience Service and Experiential Learning

  16. Rise Course Offerings – Fall 2009 Faculty release time grants for developing 6 new RISE courses [IUPUC, Info, E&T, Nursing, 2 PETM]

  18. Service Learning - 4000 students participate every year, 75 K hours of service, 250 community partners Transcriptable RISE experiences will be the hallmark of an IUPUI degree and make our students more marketable

  19. IUPUI Honors College • New founding dean hired – College inaugural reception August 27, 2009 • Action team prepared a vision paper - needs modification and implementation • Dedicated space in the University Library - needs designing, re-modeling • $1 million annual budget from Honors Program + additional resources • Exciting curriculum - dedicated new offerings, enhance existing courses • Enrichment via RISE, community activities, “Cutting Edge Lecture Series” course • Improved web site for recruitment • Scholarships and Honors Professional Admissions Program • Increased programming in Honors residence halls The Cutting Edge

  20. Shortest Time to Graduation • 4-year paths for each discipline • Using the summer semester effectively • Advising and checking degree progress on line • Early warning system • State increase in base funding [$5000 per student] for change in: ♦ number of degrees awarded ♦ number of students who graduate within 4 years Should consider increased financial support for transfer students, seniors, high ability students The clock is running
