  1. Politeness and deference • Polite behaviour is the way that we could achieve our goals demonstrating people our good manners by the strategies of courtesy, tact, affect or something like that. • Deferential behaviour related to a person with higher status or associated with specific social situations and is independent of the degree of familiarity that you have with this person.

  2. Face Positive face Negative face • The wish to be liked by society or when others like or approve our ideas. Face-saving act • When you are enhancing the other positive face damaging your face. • The desire to be independent, not imposed by others. Face-threatening act • An act which involve saying or doing something that could damage the addressee’s positive face

  3. Politeness strategies • Positive strategies: To avoid given some kind of offense to the addressee’s faces, try to avoid a face-threat act protecting his positive face. • Negative strategies: the intention of disagree the listener damaging his/her positive face.
