Joint Academic programs- creative partnership for joint/dual-degrees • 3. Curriculum integration at home- the key strategy for campus globalization for student and faculty global competence

Innovative Strategy 1: Promote Strategic Partnerships • Eliminate many inactive/weak MOUs • Select major partners with matching strengths/missions in selected regions • Develop agreements with multiple colleges • Develop meaningful activities for student mobility, faculty research and economic development

Why Strategic Partnerships? • Best utilize limited resources • Develop long-term bases for faculty/students for global experience • Provide on-site services to faculty and students • Develop academic curriculum for study abroad in semester/year without delaying graduation • Recruit/ increase enrollment of international students • Build international outreach /economic development programs for the university and state

  13. Strategic Global Partnerships • Virtual Hubs- work and collaborate with strategically selected universities • Rental Space – physicalrental space for university’s study abroad center for semesters or academic years • Branch Campus- physical campus for offering NC State degrees

Benefits of 3+X Combo Program • Take advantage of ZJU’s excellent undergraduate • education and capture the best students • Promote graduate program at NC State, most • become PhD students after 1st year • No credit transfer or accreditation issues • Best value for students/parents (money saving), • not typical 2+2 or 3+1 for double BS degrees • Mutual benefits and further strengthen the • partnership of two universities

Joint vs Dual Degree Programs • Collaborative academic degree programs with integrated curriculum by two or more partner universities • Joint degree program Complete the specified collaborative academic program and receive only one diploma issued by both universities • Dual degree program Complete the collaborative academic program and receive one separate diploma from each of the two universities (“Double” degree programs)

Example: Dual PhD Degree in Genomics and Biotechnology with SNU o • Co-Supervision – One joint advising committee with co-chairs (one from each) and faculty advisors from both institutions • Credit Transfer - Up to half of the total credits (72) required for the host institution’s degree are transferable from the home institution for an equivalent degree at the host institution • Thesis and Defense – both in English • Dual PhD in Genomics, 2010 from NC State University and Seoul National University (one international degree)

  33. Innovative Strategy 3: Curriculum Integration • General Education Programs with the Global Knowledge Co-requisite for all UG students • Integration of study abroad in academic curriculum for increasing enrollment • Global Perspective Certificate for all undergraduate students

Curriculum Integration General Education Programs NC State revised its campus-wide General Education Program (GEP) to include the Global Knowledge Co-requisite, requiring all UG to take a course that provides instruction and guidance to help students: 1) Compare systematically the ideas, values, images, cultural artifacts, economic structures, technological developments, or attitudes of people from different societies, 2) Identify the historical context of ideas and cultural practices and their dynamic relations to other historical contexts; and 3) Explain how a culture changes in response to internal and external pressures.
