  4. Beginning of Poetry Career • When she was 16 years old she met a British poet and painter named Adrian Henri • She followed him to Liverpool and lived with him for several years. He gave her confidence within her writing which led to her first job as becoming a critique of poetry for The Guardian. • Adrian Henri said to her the ‘Poets had a duty to be unfaithful’ which she disagreed with which was later inspiration to her feminist edge in her writing.

  5. Writing • She began writing poetry when she was 11 years old • Most of her poems are based on personal experience • Uses fountain pen and inkwell • Colour of ink depends on her mood

  6. Sexuality • Carol Ann Duffy is openly lesbian. This has brought upon challenges in her life especially because she is part of a Roman Catholic family. • This fact about Carol Ann Duffy would probably make it important to know more about her to understand her poetry as she may refer to her struggles regarding the issue. • “If I am a lesbian icon and a role model, that’s great, but if it’s a word that is used to reduce me, then you have to ask why someone would want to reduce me.” She wants to be seen as “a poet and a mother — that’s all.” • Carol Ann Duffy

  7. Recent Life • In May of 2009 Duffy was appointed the title of Britain’s poet laureate, making her the first women, the first Scot, and the first openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgedre (LGBT) person to acquire the title.

  8. Is it important to know about an author in order to appreciate her or his writing? • Yes it is important to understand the background of a poet as poetry is a very personal way of writing, and thus the poet will use many personal ideas and concepts. Therefore it is essential to know about a poet to fully understand his or her poetry.

  9. However… • It is not always so important to understand the author and his or her background to understand his or her poetry because the poet might not always use aspects of his or her personal experience in their works.
