  7. A Background to Web 2.0 and Digital Storytelling (and where that places “Education”)

  8. When the Internet First started: People were saying: “I can only ‘view/read’ websites; I can’t edit or change them!!!! Who makes these websites????” This was known as: “Web 1.0”

  9. The Clock has Ticked by since those days!!

  10. Very Soon...................................... New Websites Could be Made by Anyone (eg. Frontpage, Dreamweaver programs)

  11. More and More websites were being made by people around the world. People could even decide what their Web Address (URL) Would look like.....................................

  12. But the people of the world wanted more..... They wanted to ‘talk’ with each other using Computers/ICT • CHATTING • INSTANT MESSAGING • SOCIAL NETWORKING • Is what they wanted!!

  13. And what the people want.........They sometimes Get!!!!

  14. The People Got : Social Networking and “Web 2.0” Now they could communicate with each other and share ideas and work across the internet.

  15. But did the people know what new challenges the world would face because of this??? Particularly in “education”

  16. What is “Digital Storytelling” using ICT to create a new way of looking at story writing/Assignments.Examples: Movie Maker, PIVOT, Stop Motion Animaton, Powerpoint

  17. The Situation for “Education” Now.. On 1 Side we have: Vs Innovation – Great way for students to collaborate and learn from each other • DUTY OF CARE and RESPONSBILITY FOR STUDENTS • PRIVACY OF INFORMATION LAWS • ONLINE SAFETY FOR STUDENTS And on the other side we have

  18. THEN ALONG CAME: EDUBLOGS: A GREAT WAY FOR STUDENTS TO EXCHANGE IDEAS IN A SAFE, PASSWORD PROTECTED WEBSPACE How it works:Teacher signs up for ‘teacher account’Teacher signs up each studentTeachers gives students their usernames and passwordsnoone else can view or participate in blog besides teacher and students

  19. EDUBLOGS USED AROUND THE WORLD BY THOUSANDS

  20. WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ALL THIS? • Changed from ‘Web 1.0’ to ‘Web 2.0’ • students looking for ‘highly engaging’, ‘creative’ and ‘stimulating’ ways • Our students are using these types of spaces now in their ‘home lives’ and some are not using them very well!!! • Teaching our students about these Web 2.0 spaces and educating them. • Downloadable Programs being replaced with ‘free sign-up’ web spaces • It is just good to know what is out there (and what is coming!).

  21. A Closer Look at the 4 Websites

  22. Goanimate4schools

  23. zooburst

  26. How ‘Good’ and ‘Safe’ are these Websites/Spaces?

  27. WHAT MAKES THESE 4 WEBSPACES SO ‘SAFE’? 4 web spaces that combine elements of both “Digital Storytelling” and “Web 2.0”. Free (or inexpensive) 2 of them are Password Protected spaces 2 allow Teacher Accounts to be set up No Sign-up processes for students (teachers do this for 2 of the websites) No personal information needs to be supplied by students, only email address asked for (try tempalias to protect identity) Highly engaging spaces A new way of demonstrating understanding on a topic/theme.

  39. Some Final Thoughts There are a lot of these types of websites out there on the internet. Many are’safe’ and ‘password protected’ and have ‘teacher accounts’ that can be set up.Opportunities exist for collaboration and creativity.Need to be patient, as this is a new area of ICT and Education.Web 2.0 tools are a great concern in Education Departments (due to privacy of information and chatting etc.)School needs to have a solid cybersafety course taught to whole school at start of year.Parents need to be kept in touch.Students’Useragreeements need to be updated and maintained by schools
