  4. Why Are We Here? • Public sector funding cuts to come ...

  5. Ashes to Ashes • Cutbacks, redundancies; demoralisation; (crap music); …

  6. Opportunities • Are there any reasons for optimism? • We have: • Good collaboration mechanisms in place • A culture of sharing • A culture of openness (nb JISC Strategy) • Well-established and highly-regarded national services, advisory services and Innovation Support Centres • Political context likely to emphasise importance of shared services and innovation

  7. Engagement, Impact, Value • What? • JISC-funded work to explore best practices for innovative approaches to user engagement in order to maximise impact and value of various outputs • Who? • Provided by UKOLN • How? • A series of F2F events • Pre-launch event • Plans under discussion

  8. Timetable Timetable Groupwork Groupwork

  9. Inputs • Work informed by: • Case studies describing innovative approaches • Open discussions by participants • Open approach to resources and discussions Note the cultural of openness and sharing is dependent on you – you may decide to ‘batten down the hatches until the storm is over’. Note, however, the prisoner’s dilemma: “fundamental problem in game theory that demonstrates why two people might not cooperate even if it is in both their best interests to do so”

  10. Outputs • Outputs from activity: • Access to resources • Access to discussions • Synthesis report based on future events Note if you contribute in an open fashion you (a) are likely to obtain feedback which may enhance your ideas and (b) receive acknowledgements regarding your innovative approaches. But also give clear signal if you wish to talk off the record.
