  1. the HERO'S JOURNEY parallels the 3 stages of the RITE OF PASSAGE: • The Separation • The Transformation • The Return

  2. the Separation • The Call to adventure • Threshold Guardians • The wise Guide and the magic Talisman • Refusal of the Call • Hero Partner(s) • Crossing the Threshold

  3. The Call The Call to Adventure is the first occurrence in a chain of events which will separate the hero from his home and family. Usually, fate brings the call, often sending a herald—a person or animal who literally carries the message that causes the journey to begin…

  4. …Sometimes the call comes from within the hero’s own nature, and the hero will set out of his own accord.

  5. The Threshold Guardians

  6. The Wise and Helpful Guide I’m Merlin—the original wise guide…

  7. Whoaoo... What should we do next, Rufus?

  8. Well, Neo…will it be the red pill or the blue?

  9. The Magic Talisman • The Magic Talisman is an object that : • often has magical properties • is usually given to the hero by the wise guide • is often a sword • swords are symbols of legitimacy—sword passed from father to son as sign of inheritance • Sword requires hero to wield it and to make choices—to use for good or evil Hey, can you bring me my chapstick—it’s really important to me—it’s like my talisman—Gosh!!!

  10. Refusal of the Call • To refuse the call to adventure means that… • the hero will be safe. • the hero will be stagnant. • the hero will miss out on chances to grow and change. • this person will not achieve heroic stature. To answer the call to adventure is to…choose risk over safety, difficulty over ease, and growth over stagnation.

  11. Hero Partners

  12. Crossing the Threshold The Threshold represents the last barrier between the known and the unknown—to cross it is to leave behind everything that is familiar.

  13. The Labyrinth the Rescue of the Princess Losing the Guide Dragon Slaying Descent into Darkness/into the Belly of the Beast The Mystical Marriage The Sacred Grove Sacrifice and Betrayal Mystical Insight/ Revelation Transformation

  14. The Labyrinth On the hero’s journey, the trip through the maze represents a passage through the confusing and conflicting pathways of the mind in order to reach the center of one’s being; there the seeker can discover some essential truth about his or her nature. The Labyrinth has been a symbol of mythic power since before recorded history, when humans still sought shelter in the mouths of caves. With the discovery of fire, these caves could be explored and the deeper recesses were often used for ritual purposes. If the earth was believed to be the great cosmic Mother, then to travel into the complex maze of deep caves was to be enveloped by her body, and to re-emerge was to be reborn.

  15. The Rescue of the Princess

  16. Losing the Guide It is necessary for the hero to lose his guide because there comes a point in the journey when he must prove that he is capable of continuing the journey alone.

  17. Dragon Slaying Dragons guard treasure or maidens but they can use neither. Symbolically, they hold the riches and creativity of life in bondage while wreaking havoc.

  18. Descent into DarknessInto the Belly of the Beast • Hero is consumed • Old self “dies” and Hero is transformed • Rebirth of Hero’s new self

  22. The Mystical Marriage Woman represents the life-enhancing treasure held hostage by dragon. She is the complement to the male hero. Mystically, she represents the sum total of all that can be known, and since this is a journey of discovery, it is thus the hero’s job to come to know her.

  23. Forests represent mastery and transformation Also represent the unconscious mind where secrets, memories, and emotions lie waiting to be discovered The Sacred Grove • An enclosure where the hero will be transformed • Often contains a shaman archetype—hunter, warrior and ascetic all in one

  24. Sacrifice and Betrayal

  25. Mystical Insightthe Revelation
