Transformational Leadership • The leader identifies the needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executes the change with the commitment of the members of the group • They anchor their practice in ideas, values, and commitments, exhibit distinctive qualities of style and substance and can be trusted to be morally diligent in advancing the enterprises they lead.

Google – - Evan Wittenberg • Look at best practices as well as struggles • Consensus among team members is important – you don’t have to agree with all decisions, but you can accept what is decided if your opinion has been heard • We don’t use the push model of leadership – we prefer the pull model • We have a viral approach to sharing information • We are passionate about our mission

  11. – Ed Catmull • I’m still trying to figure out how this all works – I don’t know all the answers. We discuss, debate and everyone feels that they own the problems and solutions • As leaders, we don’t tell them what to do. We have a structure so they get their feedback from their peers – they help each other • A leader’s job is to protect the dynamic in the room so that they’re honest with each other • We may not always be flying, but at least we can fall with style

Japan Airlines – Haraku Nishimatsu • Company president gets to work on the city bus – his salary is only $90,000 a year • When forced to cut employee salaries, he cut his own as well • Knocked down his office walls so anyone can walk in • Buys his suits at a discount store because a boss who wears Armani puts himself at arms length from his people • “I want my people to think for themselves”

Change is Constant • Change comes from all directions, but should be driven from the bottom up • Don’t be satisfied with the status quo • Embrace change • Unconventional is ok • We function best when we can be ourselves • Be innovative and think outside the box • We encourage people to make mistakes as long as they learn from them
