  1. What will happen if extracted teeth are not replaced? The most obvious and detrimental consequence of not replacing a missing tooth is bone loss. When the teeth are present and in function, the bone is maintained. The loss of a single tooth starts a chain reaction. After a back molar tooth is lost, a series of destructive events occur including the supra-eruption of other teeth, decay, tilt, drift and gum pocket formation. Eventually, bone loss and periodontal disease will cause further destruction. If you fail to replace a lost back tooth you could eventually lose all your teeth. TREATMENT OPTIONS: Partial or Complete Dentures: Dentures are false removable teeth that are relatively quick and easy to fabricate. They can be partial, where only one or a few teeth are replaced, or complete, where all the teeth are missing in the jaw are replaced. But they have their limitations and may not be most comfortable to use as compared to the fixed options. Many varieties such as Cast partial and Flexible (Valplast) dentures are available. Bridge: A bridge uses natural teeth adjacent to the empty space to support a false tooth/teeth between them. The natural teeth need to be shaved or contoured so that a crown(cap) can be placed over top. These are called abutment teeth. The crowns on each tooth support the false tooth in between known as the pontic teeth. Dental implants:

  2. Dental implants are a substitute for artificial roots for missing teeth. They are placed in your jaw to hold a replacement crown, tooth or a set of teeth. This is an ideal treatment for people who have damaged or missing tooth/teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason and seeking a replacement. Dental Implants are typically safe and they can last for many years. Implants are made of different metallic and bone-like ceramic material that is compatible with body tissue. Once placed, the implant fuses with bone and becomes stable. This process takes about 3-4 months after which replacement tooth/teeth are placed over it. However, with new advanced technologies, it is now possible to give you a set of new teeth within a week of implant placement. The “Teeth within a day” concept is where implants are placed and temporary crowns are given within a day, so that patient can start chewing immediately! Dental implants are usually composed of two major parts: the implant, which acts as an anchor in the jaw and the crown which is the tooth part visible in the mouth. The advantage of dental implants is they are excellent options as they do not affect adjacent teeth, yet look, feel and function just as natural teeth do. Over a period of years, many advanced implant systems have been developed like Immediate loading, basal, compression, Morse taper etc. They have become less cumbersome, easier and more economical. ‘Flapless and stitchless’* techniques are also possible in many cases.
