WBCSD The WBCSD is a coalition of over 160 international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development through the three pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social progress. Our members are drawn from 30 countries and are active in over 20 major industrial sectors. The WBCSD also benefits from a thriving regional network representing over 1,000 business leaders in developing countries and nations in transition.

ObjectiveTo provide business leadership in creating a global policy framework, based on cost-effective market mechanisms, and facilitate business as a solution provider through ‘learning by doing’ projects. Energy & Climate Achievements: • Strong recognition of and relations with key decision-makers and stakeholders (e.g. Glion dialogues) • Global standard on Corporate GHG measurement and reporting in collaboration with the WRI • Capacity building on CDM and emissions trading Future plans: • To explore an overarching approach on energy and climate policy issues “The Big Tent” to be upheld by: • Promoting a global framework with common ‘building blocks’ for policy instruments • Tools & practices,e.g. GHG protocol, facilitating CDM projects • Development of E&C factsand trends • Strengthening business role and response Council project

  11. ObjectiveThis project seeks to examine the multiple relationships between business and poverty by extending the benefits of sustainable development to a wider cross-section of the poor. Sustainable Livelihoods Achievements: • Project launched in September 2001, contributed to WSSD 2002 • Progressed on communications & engagement strategy • Progressed on Field Guide to SL business based on research with member companies • New project investment appraisals initiated by 3 members in Africa Future plans: • In-depth analysis of existing business models aimed at needs of the poor • Communications: video about project, interview with CEOs • Business models: publish Field Guide • Joint SL / WB / IFC workshop • Framework Conditions: Study into country-specific factors influencing development value of private investment Council project

ObjectiveTo focus broadly on the emerging demands and challenges of corporate accountability Accountability & Reporting Achievements: • Sustainable Development Reporting report launched in January 2003 • A web-based ‘reporting portal’ that gives guidance/examples to members on reporting • Involvement with the GRI in an advisory capacity – Bjorn Stigson on GRI Board • Developed a Diagnostic Framework for looking at Accountability Future plans: • Rolling out interviews that test the Diagnostic Framework and explore accountability, sustainable development and business value drivers within companies • Explore alignment between internal accountability mechanisms and external codes, standards and frameworks (GRI, Global Compact) Council project

  16. ObjectiveHelp members to create synergy with the Global Compact initiated by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Global Compact Achievements: • Participated in several Global Compact workshops to identify areas of action that are important in order to bring a business contribution to working markets and the Global Compact Principles Future plans: • Develop synergy with current work programs and Regional Network • Support the UN GC office in preparing the June 24/25, 2004 event convened by Kofi Annan • Lead production of a Source Book with best case studies around Total Quality Model Advocacy & Comunications
