Let’s Start with the Parts: • The reproductive system begins to mature at puberty; when testosterone begins to spike • The Reproductive System is the organs that are involved in sexual intercourse and in-turn reproduction • Made up of internal and external organs; also includes hormones and glands

  3. The Male Side Penis: A tube shaped organ that extends from the body just above the testes

  4. The Male Side • In the U.S. 60-70% of baby boys are circumcised. At birth, the penis has a covering of thin loose skin called Foreskin that covers the head Often, this foreskin is removed at birth. This procedure is known as a Circumcision.

  5. To Circumcise or Not? Research what cultures/ religions have differing views on this subject. Find at least three different cultures/religions and what their views are.

  11. The Male Side The scrotum protects the sperm in the testes, it also helps keep the sperm at 98.6 degrees F, or normal body temperature. If it’s too warm, the suspensory ligament and scrotum muscles drop the testes down. If it’s too cold, the opposite occurs, and pulls the testes in closer to the body.

  12. The Male Side When puberty hits, the testes start to secrete testosterone and producing sperm. This increase in testosterone and the presence of sperm results in the ability for males to experience an erection. An erection occurs when there is an increase in blood flow to the penis.

  13. The Male Side Many different things can cause this increase in blood flow, especially during pubescent years. Even the friction of clothing can sometimes cause arousal. This can be a cause of embarrassment for many young males.

The Male Side • At the onset of sexual stimulation, the male reproductive system begins producing pre-ejaculate fluid. • This fluid is a clear mucous like liquid produced and secreted through the urethra in order to balance the pH from the acidity of urine to asafe level for the passage of sperm. This fluid can also serve as a natural lubricant. • On rare occasion, pre-ejaculate fluid may contain sperm. • Therefore, it is difficult to say that “withdrawal” (or withdrawing the penis before full ejaculation) is a safe practice for contraception.

  16. The Male Side When the male reaches the peak of sexual arousal, a series of muscular contractions begin to occur. These contractions bring the sperm through the reproductive pathways, mixing it in with other things to be secreted.

  17. The Male Side Eventually all is secreted through the penis (more specifically the urethra) in a substance called semen. Semen is a thick white or greyish fluid that contains sperm and other secretions from the male reproductive system. Other substances in semen include proteins, sugars, citric acid, and potassium.

  18. The Male Side The average volume of semen produced in a single ejaculation varies from 2 to 5 ml.

  19. The Male Side The semen from a single ejaculation may contain between 40 million and 600 million sperm, depending on the volume of the ejaculate and the length of time since the last ejaculation.
