Stateless Societies • Families are organized in groups called linges • Lineage believe they are descendents of common ancestors. • Did not have a centralized system of power • Balanced among lineages of equal power. Sa all families are equal • !9th century European colonizers who expected one single leader to rule over society.

Tracing Family Descent! • Descent determine how possession and • Property passed on what groups individuals • Belong to • Patrilineal society trace their ancestors • Through their father. • Inheritance pass from son to father. • Matrilineal society trace their ancestors • Through their mother. • But young men inherit land and wealth • From their mothers family. • MEN USUALLY HOLD THE POSITION • OF AUTHORITY.!

Age-Set System • In many African societies young people form close ties to individuals outside their line age through the age-set system. • An age set consists of young people within a region who are boring during a certain time period. • Men and women have different life stages Muslim states.

  7. Muslim States • After Muhammad’s death in 623, Muslims swept across the northwest part of the continent. • By 670 Muslims ruled Egypt and had entered the Maghrid . • As Islam spread some African rulers convertd to lslam based. • African Muslim based their government upon lalamic law.
