  2. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Prayer of the Week The Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou among women And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus; Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

  3. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Red Letter Points • List and briefly describe the five “Joyful Mysteries.” • What is “the rosary” and what is its significance? • What fivefold promise does the angel make concerning Mary’s son? List his pronouncements. • What is Elizabeth’s husband’s name? Who is their child? What is their child supposed to do, according to the angel? • What does Elizabeth call Mary? What happens to Elizabeth and her child when they encounter Mary? What is the first sentence Elizabeth “exclaimed with a loud cry” when she met Mary? • The Hail Mary: Where is it from? • Why is Mary so important (according to Catholic theology)? • When was Jesus born? Why is this a difficult question?

  4. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Life of Jesus: Early Life in Luke’s Gospel List and briefly describe the 5 “joyful mysteries” from the early life of Jesus (as in Luke’s gospel) The Annunciation (Lk 1:26-38) announcement and prophecy of birth of Jesus to Mary The Visitation(Luke 1:39-56) Mary’s visit to Elizabeth: culmination of prophecy in John The Nativity (Luke 2:1-20) The birth of Jesus – God takes flesh in our world. The Presentation (Luke 2: 22-38) Jesus “presented” at temple 40 days after birth, according to Jewish custom (a clear link) – a reference to God’s saving work. The Finding in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52) Jesus left in Jerusalem by mistake, found three days later in temple; see focus of Jesus (“…in my Father’s house”); difficult relation of human and divine; prefigures His death

  5. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings What is “the rosary” and what is its significance? • A central prayer for Catholics, it also provides an outline of important moments in life of Jesus; • It is grouped into four different types of “mystery”: “Joyful”; “Sorrowful”; “Glorious”; “Luminous,” for different experiences of Christ; • Like the Our Father, the rosary is both a prayer and summarizes important aspects of Christian faith. • As a prayer: focus is on Christ through Mary.

  6. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 1:26-38 “Annunciation” http://www.artbible.net/3JC/-Luk-01,26_Annunciation_L%20Annonce%20a%20Marie/slides/15%20ANGELICO%20DD%20THE%20ANNUNCIATION%203.html

  7. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 1:26-38 (notes): The Annunciation Some details of the Annunciation: • “In the sixth month”: what is this referring to? • The sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy • Of what house is Joseph? • House of David: messianic line; kingly • With what words does the angel first greet Mary? • “Hail, full of grace”: becomes basis of the Hail Mary and of Marian theology. • What is Mary’s first reaction to the angel? What is her ultimate reaction? • “greatly troubled” – she passes through a moment of wonder, and straight away says “Let it be to me as you say” • Unlike prophets, she does not defer due to sinfulness

  8. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 1:26-38 (notes): The Annunciation • What fivefold promise does the angel make concerning Mary’s son? List his pronouncements. • (We will later see the link to Judaism & Abraham) • He will be great; • Called Son of the Most High; • Will receive throne of David; • Will reign over Israel (“House of Jacob”); • Kingdom will have no end.

  9. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 1:39-56: “The Visitation” http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Champaigne_visitation.jpg

  10. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Visitation - Luke 1:39-56 (Also: Luke 1:8-17) • What is Elizabeth’s husband’s name? Who is their child? What is their child supposed to do, according to the angel? • Zechariah (2:51 of video 1, Nativity Story) (Luke 1:8-17) • “turn many… to the Lord”; “turn the disobedient to wisdom”; “make ready a people” = PROPHET – John the Baptist • What does Elizabeth call Mary? What happens to Elizabeth and her child when they encounter Mary? What is the first sentence Elizabeth “exclaimed with a loud cry” when she met Mary? • “The mother of my Lord”; child “leaps” in her womb like David before the Ark of the Covenant) • “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (further Biblical basis of the Hail Mary).

  11. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Hail Mary The Hail Mary: Where is it from? Scripture and Tradition: • A tradition not recorded in scripture of Christians holding Mary to be particularly holy. • Passages of scripture referring to Mary: • The visit from Gabriel at the Annunciation (“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” – Luke 1:28) • The visit to Elizabeth at the Visitation (“Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” – Luke 1: 42)

  12. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Why is Mary so important? (according to Catholic theology) Proper understanding of Christ involves Mary/Incarnation • “Mary has … (an) essential reference to the Word of God and, in him and through him, to the history of salvation.” One cannot speak of Christ without an understanding of Mary • “…Only when it touches Mary (is) Christology itself as radical as the faith of the Church requires.” - Joseph Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI) Mary fulfills central role in salvation history • Spoken of as “new Eve”; through Eve sin, though Mary grace; seen as most perfect of human race

  13. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2:1-20 “The Nativity” http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nativity_alabaster_MNMA_Cl23755.jpg

  14. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2:1-20 - The Nativity • When was Jesus born? Why is this a difficult question? • Dating the birth – complex questions, unclear answers • Herod died 4 B.C.? (Jesus birth during his reign?) • Quirinius census in 7 A.D.? (Lk 2.2); (Jesus born then?) • Dionysius Exiguus misdates birth in 6th century A.D.(popularized by Bede); • We date it as beginning of western calendar (0 A.D.); actual year uncertain • What is a “manger”? What theological significance might this hold for Jesus? • To eat: place for hay, food (French: “To eat”); • Implication: Jesus/God Himself will become our food • Bethlehem: “House of bread”

  15. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Nativity/Incarnation What is the Christian teaching of the “Incarnation”? • Nativity = childbirth (“Nativity Scene”) • Incarnation = taking human flesh • Reincarnation = soul migrates to new body • “Fully human, fully divine” = orthodox teaching of who Jesus truly is • “orthodox”: correct opinion • Jesus’ conception is the actual incarnation; nativity is His bodily, visible presence at birth

  16. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2: 22-38 “The Presentation” http://www.dl.ket.org/webmuseum/wm/paint/auth/angelico/present.jpg

  17. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Presentation, Hans Holbein the Elder, 1500-1501

  18. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2: 22-38 - The Presentation • Who are Simeon and Anna? What does Simeon tell Mary at the Presentation? • Simena and Anna are prophets present at the Presentation; • Simeon was told he would see “the Lord’s Christ” (God’s anointed) before death • Anna was an elderly prophetess dedicated to the temple; she links Jesus to the redemption of Israel • Simeon predicts Mary’s son responsible for “the rising and falling of many”; and that a sword will pierce her heart • He points to the issue of redemption; and the importance of Mary

  19. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2:41-52: “The Finding” http://www.christusrex.org/www1/giotto/SSC-dottori-vl.jpg

  20. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Luke 2:41-52: The Finding in the Temple Address these three points on “The Finding” • At the “Finding,” how many days does it take for His parents to find Jesus? Any possible significance of this? • Three days; foreshadows death-resurrection of Jesus: Mary’s anxiety – her sorrow • What might be the meaning of Jesus’ response to his anxious mother? • That he is both divine and human: Jesus remembers both – this continues to be difficult for people to understand • What is the concluding consequence of this episode? (see Luke 2:51) • Jesus is obedient; Mary keeps it “in her heart” – both remain righteous and focused on doing/seeking God’s will

  21. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings TERMS • Hypocrite: • One who acts in such a way as to go against the teachings they proclaim and demand of others • Synagogue • Jewish house of worship (many synagogues, only one “temple” in Jerusalem) • Grace a gift of God; outpouring of God to us as free gift, not earned or deserved; should elicit thanksgiving • Christology the study of Christ, trying to understand who he is, his relation to God and to us • Mariology the study of Mary, trying to understand who she is, her nature, her relation to God and to her Son
