  1. Registration PortfolioWhy are they returned? • Too much detail of A grade Training • Too little evidence of B Grade Training • No evidence of Training in more than one specialty

  2. Too much detail on A grade training • It is structured with plenty of evidence • Often pages of detail • Gaining the PCCC has been by assessment • Can be used to provide some evidence in the portfolio but must not be used for all

  3. Too little from life after A training - problems seen • Frugal – sometimes only a few paragraphs • Has been presented only as bullet points • Lack of evidence of cases analysed • Lack of evidence of CPD • Too little breadth of post grade A training

  4. What are we looking for? • Need 1 or 2 pieces of evidence for each of the competence categories • Should reflect trainees own work • Evidence can be mix of: • Case reports • Audits • Presentations • Experiments • Literature searches • Journal Club participation

  5. What are we looking for? • Evidence that training and development did not stop after A • Demonstrate that trainee: • Has developed a critical approach • Can assess and draw conclusions from scientific data • Interpret significance of cytogenetic findings and need for further studies • Is aware of their boundaries and knows when to ask for advice • Be explicit about the actual participation

  6. What are we looking for? • Numbers of cases analysed and abnormal cases with case reports included from some of these • Active presentation in seminars and lab meetings – not just lists of ones attended • Hopefully evidence of involvement in R & D • Describe service development and new training in main part of portfolio • PowerPoint presentations and case reports in appendices • Good cross referencing to core competencies

  7. Training in only one specialty • Should not be a problem but there must be compensatory gain in depth • In specialist lab secondment should be considered
