  1. Praying in the Holy Spirit11/20/2005Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. Praying in the Holy Spirit • There are a number of commands in Scripture concerning the Holy Spirit: • Grieve not the Spirit. (Eph. 4:30) • Quench not the Spirit. (1 Thess. 5:19) • Walk in the Spirit. (Gal. 5:2)

  3. Praying in the Holy Spirit 20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. (Jude 20-21)

  4. Praying in the Holy Spirit 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

  5. Praying in the Holy Spirit 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. (Rom 8:26-27)

  6. Praying in the Holy Spirit • ‘Groans’ = inaudible prayers; inward and unexpressed feelings. • Why does He help us? • We know not what we should pray for.

  7. Praying in the Holy Spirit • How does he help us? • He ‘intercedes for us’ in verse 26. • He ‘intercedes for the saints’ in verse 27. • He is our prayer partner (v. 26) • Principles of ‘praying in the Spirit’: • We don’t know what we need.

  8. Praying in the Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit does know what we need. He will help us in our weaknesses. • He will reveal to us our real needs. • He will go with us and intercede on our behalf.

  9. Praying in the Holy Spirit 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: (Acts 15:28) 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. (John 15:7)

  10. Praying in the Holy Spirit • He also prays for us concerning things for which we do not ask. • The Holy Spirit always prays according to God’s will. ‘in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thess 5:18)

  11. Praying in the Holy Spirit • Conclusion 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

  12. Praying in the Holy Spirit 16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

  13. Praying in the Holy Spirit 17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. (1 Cor 14:14-17)

  14. Praying in the Holy Spirit • To pray with the Spirit is • -- to allow the Spirit of God to control our prayer life. • --to be in harmony with Him is to realize answered prayer. • He is our prayer partner... • He is our intercessor. • Are we in tune with Him?
