  2. What is In Vitro Fertilization? • Offers infertile couples a chance to have children biologically related to them • Assisted reproduction - A man’s sperm and a woman’s egg are combined in a laboratory dish • 2-4 embryos are then transferred to the woman’s uterus to develop

  3. Infertility Problems • Women with blocked, severely damaged or no fallopian tubes use this method • This method is used to overcome infertility caused by endometriosis or problems with the man’s sperm. • Used when couples just can’t conceive and have tried other methods

  4. Successful Pregnancies • 37% among women younger than 35 years • 28% for those aged 36-39 • 13% for those older than 40 • IVF was used successfully for the first time in the United States in 1981 • More than 250,000 babies have been born since then

  5. Cost & Frequency • $12,400 per cycle • Less than 5% of infertile couples use IVF

  6. Pros & Cons • Pros -They can have a biological baby - IVF is safe - Children, monitored from birth to age 5 were found as healthy as children conceived naturally • Cons - Other studies have found a slightly increased risk of genetic disorders in children - Doesn’t always work
