  2. Daily Writing: Argument 09/23/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Should you have to take tests in school? Why or why not? Give at least 3 arguments. • Should cell phones be allowed in school? Why or why not? RESPECT your peers. • After the debate: • Journal title: Debate Reflection • Was there anything you wanted to say but didn’t? Explain. • Choose and rewrite 3-5 statements. Tuesday: Absent? • You are responsible for getting the materials from the appropriate folder (labeled by day) for the day you were absent, and for checking my website* for what you missed and when things are due. • You have one extra day to turn in your homework. • Write the date you were absent clearly in the right corner. • If your homework is not clearly marked or you hand it in later than a day after the due date, it will be marked late. *Don’t have internet at home? Go to the public library, or ask someone during lunch to bring you to the computer lab. NO EXCUSES. • You are responsible for handing in the homework due the day you were gone as soon as you get back. • Write the date you were absent clearly in the right corner. • If your homework is not clearly marked or you hand it in later than the day you come back, it will be marked late.

  6. Tuesday: Vocab & Story • Pre-read for V&V story Life Over Death pg. 55 • Silently read & answer Vocabulary Check & Reading Check questions (pg. 58-61) on a separate piece of paper. Raise your hand and I’ll collect it. • Journal title: Life Over Death Essay # [1 or 2] • Write a 3-part essay (intro, body paragraphs & conclusion) on one of the two essay choices under “Essay Assignments” on page 62. Hand in your journals and your worksheet before you leave! If you forget, it’s late.

  8. Wednesday: Hole in my life… • Hole in my life!!! We’ll start it tomorrow. 11th and 12th graders on field trip… • Finish Practice Exercises for Part A Chptr 2 Vocab (pg. 9-11). • Notebook title: Vocab Chpt 2 Part B • Work on Part B vocab. Cover dictionary definition and try to figure out the real definition using context clues. Then look at the definition and put stars next to the ones you got incorrect. • Finish Practice Exercises for Part B Chptr 2 Vocab (pg.13-15) • Review Power Words. • Take “Chapter Review” Matching “quiz” on pg. 15-16.

Thursday: Hole in my Life Notebook title: Pre-reading for HIML • What is the significance of the title? • What could cause a “hole” in someone’s life? • What do you think the story will be about? • Does the photo of Gantos facing the title page give any clue as to his identity? What conclusions about this person could a reader draw from the photograph alone? Would the conclusions differ when paired with the title?

Thursday: Hole in my Life Notebook title: HIML 1 Summary & Reactions • After you read the first chapter, summarize it and write your reactions. • Make sure the summary is in your own words but is just a retelling of the main ideas of the chapter. • Reactions might begin with: • “The way this story starts reminds me of another story...” • “If I were Gantos, I would…” • “I like the way he describes…” • “It reminds me of…”
