  1. Data Acquisition System (DAS) GONG H-alpha Review

  2. Overview • Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components used wherever possible. • Dell Server running CentOS open source linux • Engineering Design Team (EDT) PCIe8 DV Camera Link frame grabber • Spectracom TSync-PCIe Time Code Processor • Software for image acquisition and processing written using drivers/tools provided by board vendors on open source development platform (Eclipse) GONG H-alpha Review

  3. Hα DAS Block Diagram GONG Instrument Controller GONG Status Hα Workstation (Dell T610 Server) DVC Camera EDT Frame Grabber GONG HQ Images GPS Time Receiver Spectracom Time Code Generator GONG H-alpha Review

  4. Hα Workstation • Dell PowerEdge T610 server in rackmount configuration • 2 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5550 processors @ 2.66GHz • 12 GB RAM • Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) RAID Array with 8 - 146GB hot-swap drives • 2 drives in 146GB RAID1 (mirror) for boot volume • 5 drives in 584GB RAID5 array (Approx. 100 days data retention) • 1 drive as hot spare for RAID5 array • SCSI Card to allow attaching external storage or tape drives • Remote Management Interface • Redundant hot-swappable power supplies and cooling fans • CentOS Operating System (Community edition of RedHat Enterprise Linux) GONG H-alpha Review

  5. Frame Grabber Board • EDT PCIe8 DV • PCI Express 8-lane card • Camera Link interface (Industry Standard) • Provided by camera vendor • Drivers and other software development tools provided at no additional charge GONG H-alpha Review

  6. Time Code Processor • Spectracom TSync-PCIe • Synchronizes with existing GPS Time receiver at each GONG site • Provides accurate time stamp information for Hα images • Will be used to trigger image capture sequence • Ensures Hα system remains synchronized with GONG host system (especially important during calibration sequence) • Drivers and other software development tools provided at no additional charge GONG H-alpha Review

  7. Image Acquisition/Processing • No suitable software available for real time data acquisition and processing • Development done “in-house” • Software written using drivers/tools provided by board vendors on open source development platform (Eclipse) GONG H-alpha Review

  8. Summary Robust COTS components used wherever possible Use of open source software and tools wherever possible GONG H-alpha Review

  9. Status Frame Grabber boards were included with each camera purchased. Prototype Server and Time Code Board have been purchased. Remaining Servers and Time Code boards to be purchased after Design Review. GONG H-alpha Review
