  2. About Me My name is Howard Taylor. My Lakeland email address is: You can contact me by email, or make arrangements for an appointment during class. If the class gets cancelled, you will get an email announcing such, and a note will be place on the classroom door.

  3. The Classroom Settings • We will meet in Rm. 105 for the traditional setting • We will meet in the computer lab, Rm. 107, for various reading activities

  4. CLASS WORK TOPICS 8/23– Learn about course objectives, attendance/grading policies, using the computer lab to increase comprehension level After the first day, we will work on these course topics: • Reading, Outlining & Study Skills • Library Access Skills • Learning Style Inventory • Listening Skills (continued on next slide)

  5. Topics in RDG 050 (Continued) • Memory Skills (tricks and tips to help memorize content) • Comprehension through Context Clues and Main Idea • Critical Reading and Thinking Skills • Problem Solving • Logical Thinking Skills—using logic problems (continued on next slide)

  6. Topics in RDG 050 (Continued) • Multiple Context Concepts • Pre-testing and Post-testing • Test-taking Strategies • Internet Reading (Google Books, E-Books, Blogs, etc.)

  7. How will you be evaluated? A minimum of C is required to pass this course. I will be watching for class participation including how you: • Observe and pay attention during class as to what’s going on • Grow in your reading level • Listen during class • Perform on at least one oral presentation; • Write-- This class will require four papers. • Score on Quiz and test scores • Score on other project assignments (A performance rubric will be used on these) Details will be given later in the class.

  8. Attendance Requirements • You will be allowed 6 absences. I will take roll each class session. After the 7th absence, you will have to be dropped from the class. • You don’t have to tell me about “Why” you were absent, and no excuse, etc. will be allowed on the 7th incident. • Please sit in the same seat each class session so that I can maintain a seating chart. Not being in the correct seat=an absence.

  9. The Syllabus Specific rules, guidelines and other topics are covered in the class syllabus. You are responsible for know what’s in the syllabus for RDG 050

  10. The Novels RDG 050 requires the reading of two novels as assigned by the teacher. Your writing papers and other work will be based around the novels Here are the titles and Info for ordering or finding your own titles (borrow, check out or purchase): • Abraham Lincoln, A photographic story of a lifeby Tanya Lee Stone (ISBN: 13-978-0-7566-0833 jpbc) You’ll need a copy by (Sept. 6) • The Secret Life of Bees, a novel by Sue Monk Kidd (ISBN: 0 14 20.0174.0 pbk) Have a copy of Bees by midterm Ideas for Procuring Books on the next slide

  11. Getting your Novels • Check out from Lakeland Library, or any public library. They can order books from the Library System • Order used copies or new copies from Borders.com or Amazon, or perhaps Ebay. • Used books only run $1-$2, but the shipping cost is a little more than the cost.
