Pierre elliott trudeau

  • Born on October 18th, 1919 in Montreal.

  • Wealthy and cultured family.

  • Father was a successful businessman and mother was of Scottish descent.

  • Studied at various universities including Harvard.

  • Law professor from 1961 – 1965 at Université de Montréal.

  • Joined the Liberal Party in 1965 and ran successfully in his riding.

  • Appointed Minister of Justice in 1967 under the Pearson government.

  • In 1968, Trudeau was elected the fifteenth Prime Minister of Canada.

  • His passion and courage sparked his massive popularity which coined the term “Trudeaumania.”

  • In 1963, the Front de Libération du Quebec began setting off bombs in Montreal, killing 6 people and injuring 40 others.

  • In October 1970, the FLQ kidnapped James Cross (British Trade Commissioner), and demanded $500,000 and the release of 23 FLQ members in prison. Days later, they kidnapped the minister of labour and immigration, Pierre Laporte.

  • Trudeau sent the army into Ottawa, and when asked how far he would go to protect government officials, he replied with “Just watch me.”

  • Three days later he invoked the War Measures Act, which caused a lot of controversy.

  • 90% of Canada agreed to banish the FLQ, the next day Laporte was strangled and left in a car trunk.

  • According to the NDP, Trudeau used “a sledgehammer to crack a peanut”.

  • 1971- Trudeau marries Margaret Sinclair and has three sons (Justin, Alexandre, and Michel)

  • 1972 - Trudeau won a minority government with the NDP.

  • 1974- the Liberals win back a majority government.

  • 1977– Separates from Margaret Sinclair (later to be divorced in 1984)

  • 1979 – Conservatives won the Federal election with a minority government.

  • 1980 – In the next federal election, Pierre wins a majority government.

  • Trudeau is responsible for introducing both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Constitution Act in 1982.

  • On June 30th, 1984, Trudeau retires from office.

  • Pierre Elliott Trudeau died on September 28th, 2000.
