  2. Monday 10/4/10Learning Goals: By the end of this lesson, I will be able to…1. Restate information about Mumbai relevant to Q & A by VikasSwarup. 2. Compose a response to statements on a unit two “Anticipation Guide” in which I make judgements about real life situations. Do Now: On page Agenda: Do Now and homework check (non-fiction reading) Pair Share Review purposes of non-fiction/types of non-fiction Notes on Mumbai and video clips. Go over HW questions on non-fiction reading: “The Real Slumdog Millionaire” Anticipation Guide: Take a Stand! • How do you think your life would change if you won the lottery? Do you think your life would change for the better or for the worse? What would be the pros and cons? • Make a connection between this questions, your response to it and the non-fiction reading you did over the weekend. Homework: Due Wednesday! Read the first two chapters of Qand A and complete the during reading notes.

Pre-Reading Notes on Mumbai The novel we are about to read, movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and the article you read over the weekend are all about a city in India called Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). Important Facts about Mumbai: • The most populous cities in India and the second most populous city in the world. • It is the industrial and entertainment capital of India. It is the home of Bollywood (the Indian version of Hollywood) and lots of movie stars and major corporations. • Some of the most wealthy, famous and powerful people in India live in Mumbai, but it also home to large slums and a large population of street children who live on the streets and support themselves and their families by begging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQWpefYGIIs&feature=fvst http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIzbwV7on6Q Learning Goal: SWBAT Summarize information about Mumbai relevant to Q & A by VikasSwarup.

Learning Goal: SWBAT Compose a response to statements on a unit two “Anticipation Guide” in which I make judgements about real life situations Unit Two Anticipation Guide Put a number of 1-4 next to each of the statements below. 1=Strongly Disagree 2= Disagree 3=Agree 4=Strongly Agree • Committing horrible crimes is sometimes justified. • A person should protect their friends at all costs– even if it means putting yourself in great danger. • We are all shaped by the place we live in (our context determines who we are). • Knowledge and wisdom come from life experiences, not formal education (school and books). • People are usually not what they appear to be. • There is no such thing as good luck or bad luck– everything that happens to us is because of our choices. Choose two of the statements above and explain why you gave it the number that you did. IN other words, write 2-3 complete sentences explaining your feelings about two out of the six statements.

  5. Tuesday 10/5/10Learning Goal: SWBATComplete the “During Reading Notes” for the first two chapters of Q & A by VikasSwarup. Do Now: Agenda: Do Now (silent and in assigned seats) Independent Work Time: Students use the period to read Q & A (the prologue and the first chapter, “ The Death of a Hero” and complete their “During Reading Notes” for these two chapters. Why has Ram been arrested? Why does he pretend to not understand English in the prologue when he is at the police station? Homework: Finish reading “Prologue” and “Death of a Hero” for tomorrow. Complete “During Reading Notes” for each chapter (to be handed in for a grade tomorrow!)

Explain my response to the “Anticipation Guide” by participating in a “Take a Stand” discussion activity. Do Now:p.30 Agenda: Do Now (collect homework) Share Do Now Gates testing! Anticipation Guide Take a Stand! • What do you think of Q & A so far? • What questions do you have? • What are you wondering about, or confused about? Homework: Read “The Burden of a Priest” (p. 35-53) and complete the active reading assignment.

Identify three examples of transgression in the first three chapters of the book. Do Now: On page _____ Agenda: Do Now Vocabulary mini-lesson Partner Work: examples of transgression in the first three chapters. Homework: 1. Finish your examples of transgression chart if you didn’t finish in class. 2. Reading quiz on the first three chapters tomorrow! • What do you think the word transgress means? What would it mean to describe someone as transgressive?

Transgress (verb) • If you transgress then you are breaking a rule in some way, or going against a norm, or a way that people expect you to act. To transgress means to go against the grain. • If someone is transgressive (adjective) then they are the kind of person who does not conform to what others think they should be.

Transgress: Definitions to further our understanding • to violate a law, command, moral code, etc.; offend; sin. • to pass over or go beyond (a limit, boundary, etc. • Moral Code: “The G-Code” The written and unwritten rules (the unwritten rules often inform the written rules) about how to live your life and be a good person. • Examples of boundaries: socioeconomic status, gender, race, sexual orientation. Learning Goals: SWBAT Explain in their own words and illustrate the word transgress and make connections between the meaning of the word and the characters in the novel.

  11. Q & A Review: Partner Work Directions: Work with a partner to find three examples of moments of transgression from anywhere in the first three chapters of the book. Learning Goal: SWBAT Identify three examples of transgression in the first three chapters of the book.

Recall the main events from the first three chapters of Q & A by VikasSwarup by taking and passing a reading quiz and working with a small group to list the main events in preparation for creating a plot line. 2. Demonstrate my understanding of the word transgress by identifying and discussing moments of transgression in the novel with a small group. Do Now: On page 32 Agenda: Do Now Reading Quiz Review of vocabulary lesson from yesterday (transgress) Small group discussion: moments of transgression in the novel. Partner work– list events in the first three chapters. Answer the following question in at least two complete sentences: • How might transgression lead to change? Homework: Due Thursday 10/14! 1. Read “A Brother’s Promise” and “Thought for the Crippled” and complete the during reading and post-reading assignments.

What is this character’s role in the story? • Describe Salim. What is his relationship like with Ram? • Who is Armaan Ali? • What happens in the movie theater? Why is this an important moment for Salim? • Explain the significance of Ram’s name (all three parts of his name). • Who was father Timothy? Describe Ram’s relationship with him. • Who was father John? • What was father Timothy’s secret? • Why does Ram leave his home at the Church of St. Mary? In other words, how does the chapter, “The Burden of a Priest” end?
