Just some facts • Smoking cigarettes causes one in every five deaths in the United States per year, that’s 443,000 deaths. • Smoking causes 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men and 80% in women. • Smoking increases coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times. • The chance of a having a stroke are increased by 2 to 4 times.

  3. Cancers caused by Smoking • Acute myeloid leukemia • Bladder cancer • Cancer of the cervix • Cancer of the esophagus • Kidney cancer • Cancer of the larynx (voice box) • Lung cancer • Cancer of the oral cavity (mouth) • Pancreatic cancer • Cancer of the pharynx (throat) • Stomach cancer

  4. Other health affects caused by smoking cigarettes… • Adverse reproductive and early childhood effects: • Infertility • Preterm delivery • Stillbirth • Low birth weight • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

Youth and Young Adult Statistics • In the U.S.A. about 3,800 kids up the age of 18 try their first cigarette • About 1,000 of these kids become daily cigarette smokers • 19.5% of high school students were reported to have smoked cigarettes in 2009, 5.2% of middle school students. • 22.5% of white/non-Hispanic students reported smoking cigarettes, this is the highest of all demographics
