  1. Tile Testbeam Program Today’s Plans and Thoughts

  2. Testbeam Program • Tile Goal: 12% of Barrel & EB in beam over next ~3 years: • 8 Barrels + 8 EBAs + 8 EBCs total • Currently Completed: • 1 Barrel + 1 EBA + 3 EBCs • IFA15, IFA24, IFA38, ANL15, JINR18 • Easily can do 1 Barrel + 2 EB’s per period • 2x this also doable if pushed.

  3. H8 Table Setup 20° Incidence 90° Incidence

  4. Typical Run Period • Install Production Drawers! • Traditional Reason for slow progress. • Use Cs to Set HV: Cs target value set to 1.2 pC/GeV. • Beam: • 180 GeV electrons at 20 , ±90 -- 2 EB’s + Barrel • 180 GeV  at ±90, projectively -- 2 EB’s + Barrel • Some 50 GeV electrons, some 180 GeV  • 20 GeV (special beam) electrons at 20, ±90 -- 2 EB’s + Barrel • Start NOW with Module 0. • Electrons,  at ±90.

  5. Some Observations • 50K Triggers/Run. • DAQ-1 => <10 minutes/run. • Almost too fast • Ntuples are huge and difficult to use • 12+ hours per pair of SD’s to complete the standard program. • Possible to exchange modules during our beam period if needed. • EBs Certainly. Barrel more difficult. • Each Period we take 300-500 runs with about 10 million triggers.

  6. Muons vs Cs data RMS = 2.5%

  7. Electrons at  = 20° E/Ebeam =1.140 E/Ebeam =1.004 MC says 20 = 90% 90  1.2 pC/GeV works OK E/Ebeam =1.126 E/Ebeam =0.977 Do we not know our calibration, or do we not know our 20 GeV beam?

  8. Gravy • Best Environment for Production Debugging/Development • First users for DAQ-1 • Drawer Integration • Design errors • Component Integration: HV, Laser, Cs, Digitizers • ….. • More Surprises? • Most assuredly until the end!

  9. EXPECTED STATUS of CALORIMETERS and TABLE AREA - 2002 • Barrel Module 0 will be the bottom module mounted on the table. • 2 layers of Production Modules will be on top: • June • Barrel #34 + EBA# 8 + Late EBC • July • Barrel#1 or #4 + Type n EBC + Type n’ EBC (Standard Drawer Conf) • August • Barrel#6n + EB?? + EB?? • 6 Unique-to-Module Production Drawers Read out Each Beam Period. • June: 6 SD’s needed • July:+4 SD’s • August: +4 SD’s

  10. Scenario to Finish LHCC Recommends SPS Running Continue as: ‘04  ‘03  ‘02 { Well defined 

  11. Low energy studies • Done by other experiments in the past • UA2 (NIM A244 (1984)) • R807 (NIM A241 (1985)) • ZEUS (NIM A290 (1990)) • D0 (FERMILAB-Conf-93/049-E) • CDF (NIM A409 (1998)) • Hadron energy loss by ionization: e/h variation

  12. Low energy at H8 • Currently energies down to 5 GeV for pion beam with poor pion content (1998) • Interest for the calorimetry (combined and standalone) and TRT • Designing for possibility to ~ 1 GeV • When? • Scheduled for 2002 shutdown • Started a preliminary technical evaluation by SL • Not yet certain to happen: Lack of enthusiasm. • Better definition of the optics and of the beam characteristics (Spring-Summer 2002). Preliminary design -> BIG BEAM SPOT. • First Runs for Tilecal, TRT and Muons could be in 2003

  13. Possibility of a wedge barrel run • Probably the last test beam period before the LHC run (2006 run may be very short) • It gives the chance for studying many aspects of the barrel calorimetry before ATLAS • ~Real Combined Response • Real-scale Modules • Triggering, readout and DAQ à la ATLAS • The common DAQ is almost there already: DAQ-1 • Tile and Muons already use it • TRT and Muons would be happy to run at the same time • SCT and Pixel are also potentially interested This program costs money and effort. People are busy and not really enthusiastic

  14. Combined barrel calorimetry Module 0 Barrel Module 0 1 or 2 Barrel Modules 2 or 0 extBarrel Modules

  15. Unsettled Issues • Do we run a combined run in ‘04? • DAQ Guru = ? • Oleg has been the best. Ever. • RODs • Valencia appears not suited to electronic design and construction. • Finger Power Supplies • Switching noise, rad hard, controls, ... • Georges started. No money. Ivan not Tile dedicated. • People • Participation is dwindling as in all experiments. • Analyzers dwindling. Same handful of people. New Results DB needs upkeep.
