  1. Matakuliah : M0184 / Pengolahan Data Distribusi Tahun : 2005 Versi : Session - 22DISTRIBUTED DATABASE DESIGN AND ADMINISTRATION DISTRIBUTED DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

  2. OBJECTIVES • Database administration and data administration • Local database administration • The effect of distribution on database administration • Administration function • Meta data management

  3. Local Database Administration • Database administration refer to administration of the local DBs • Database administrator (DBA) responsible for the management of DB system throughout the entire software life cycle

  4. Data Administration • Data administration refers to administration at a global level • Encompassed the entire data resources from mainframe to micro • Increasingly a highly technical, specialist function related to the physical management of a single DB or group • Data Administrator (DA) will perform on global level

  5. Distributed DB Administrator (DDBA) • Handling management of DB system • Handling distribution of the data • DDBA requires tools to assist in the optimal allocation of base relation, of replication, etc. • Be able to monitor performance in order to tune the system

  6. Administration Function DBA of centralized DB • Design and implementation of the logical and physical DB design • Design and implementation of external DB schema in consultation with local users • Implementation of local security and integrity • Local DB tuning and performance monitoring • Planning and implementation of Local DB re-organization • Documentation of local DB and schema

  7. Administration Function Cont’d DBA of Distributed DB • Same function with centralized DBA • Definition of those portion DB which are to be contributed to the global DB • Mapping rules between those fragments and the local data • Conversion rules between local and global data • Specification of security and integrity constraints on the fragments which are peculiar to the global level

  8. Administration Function Cont’d Data Administrator (DA) • Documentation of the global data resource • Establishment and monitoring of standards for data naming, ownership, etc • Liaison with global end-user, management, data processing • Conflict resolution between different user group • Definition of global security and integration • Development of data resource plan • Definition of global schema • Promotion of data sharing

  9. Meta-data Management • Local system catalogues - centralized catalogue - fully replicated catalogues - distributed catalogue • Global data dictionary
