  6. Meal patterns • Jamaicans eat a midafternoon lunch as the main meal of the day. • followed by a light meal of bread, fried plantains, or fried dumplings • a hot drink early in the evening.

  7. Curry Goat • Curry Goat is a popular Jamaican dish, originating in India. It is a popular dish at parties, weddings, and other celebrations.. Always served with rice.

  8. Dumplings • Cooked balls of dough • Based on flour, potatoes, and bread • May include: meat, fish, and/ or vegetables • They can be eaten by themselves, in soups or stews, with gravy, or in any other way

  9. Ackee • Eating an unopened ackee will poison you. • Served with saltfish as an international meal • Consumed mainly in Jamaica, Haiti, and some part of West Africa

Emancipation Day • Celebrating the declaration of freedom to slaves • At midnight, On July 31st, 1838 it was reported that many slaves went to the hilltops to watch the sun rise symbolizing a new beginning in their life. • All schools and public buildings are closed • Still celebrated today by re-enacting the Emancipation Declaration • August 1st
