  3. Partner Share Adjectives that look like verbs that end with –ing or ed: The whispering wind blew across the city. Identify the participle in the following sentences The smiling child enjoyed her ice cream. The broken car stop in the middle of the road.

  4. Participial Phrases- are phrases that describe the subject (noun) of the sentence Examples: Participial phrases can be placed at the beginning of a sentence. Holding the sword steady, the knight approached the dragon. Participial Phrases can be placed in the middle of a sentence. The knight, holding the sword steady, approached the dragon. Non Example: The knight approached the dragon holding the sword steadily.

  5. Why is it important to know how to combine sentences with participial phrases? It will help us to become better writers because we know a new way of writing a sentence.

Combining Sentences with participial phrases • Read the sentences • Identify the subject(noun) of both sentence • Change the predicate into a participial phrase by adding ing or ed to the verb • Use a commas 1.The fire fighters put out the fires. 2.They worked around the clock. Working around the clock, the fire fighters put out the fires. The fire fighters, working around the clock, put out the fires.
