  3. ARRIVA’s Role in the CATCH Project Partners with Merseytravel and Liverpool City Council since the project’s inception, bringing “private sector” expertise and resources to the project. Fitted 88 buses with particulate traps in Speke garage Liverpool. Fitted 16 buses with catalytic traps and exhaust gas recirculation in Bootle garage Liverpool. Having been successful in winning an open competitive tender, have just started to operate a fleet of 6 Hybrid diesel-electric buses from Bootle garage Liverpool

  4. Speke garage, Liverpool • 88 Dinex DPX traps fitted in April/May 2003 • Fitted to: • Volvo B10B single decks, Euro 1, 1993-5 (40) • Volvo Olympian double-decks Euro 1, 2, 1993-8 (12) • Volvo B10BLE single decks Euro 2, 2001 (6) • DAF DB 250 double-decks Euro 1, 1995 (13) • DAF SB120 single-decks, Euro 2, 2000/1, (17)

  5. Speke trapsPerformance • All vehicles achieved significant reduction in tailpipe particulates. • All vehicles had no difficulty in achieving “reduced pollution certificate standards” But • Significant “mechanical” problems with exhaust system. • After 14 months, a number of trap failures.

  6. Bootle Garage • 16 Euro 2 Dennis Darts (2000/2001) fitted with STT-Emtec Catalytic traps and Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems in November/December 2004. • Designed to give over 90% reduction in particulates • AND • Significant reduction in Oxides of Nitrogen

  7. Bootle depot Trap and EGR Performance • As expected, significant reduction in particulates. • EGR system not immediately activated on all vehicles due to control system problems. • Oxides of nitrogen not easily measure=d using commercially available equipment. • One vehicle being fitted with monitoring equipment.

  8. Bootle depot – Hybrid Buses • 6 Optare Solo with Enerco series - hybrid system ordered, 4 delivered so far. • Being operated on a new service in the inner city area. • A few “teething problems”, but vehicles give an impressive display compared to simple battery electrics.

  9. Basic Vehicle – Optare Solo 8.5 metre, 28 seats +17 standing Diesel engine and auto gearbox replaced by batteries and an electric motor. “On-board” battery charging with a small diesel engine and generator.

  10. Key Features Fully wheelchair accessible Kneeling suspension Low exhaust emissions Potential zero exhaust emissions for 6 – 8 miles range. Braking recharges batteries, significant energy reduction
