  2. Moving to Year 1 • changes for September 2015 • improve independence • increase differentiation • staff changes • structure of the day

  3. Daily Routine • Children will line up in the playground. They will be collected by their class teacher. Parents will be asked to remain on the playground. • They will be going through the main Year 1 doors. • They will need a P.E. kit, a waterproof jacket, water bottle and their sandwich box. (If required)

  4. Lessons • In the morning, lessons are focused upon literacy and maths tasks. • Children will be grouped according to ability. These groups are fluid and subject to change. • Groups will be taken to work out of the classroom so that specific objectives can be taught. • In the afternoon, topic activities will be taught as a class. These again will be differentiated in order to meet your child’s needs.

  5. Playtimes • Your child’s play will be at 10.25 a.m. for 15 minutes. • This year, children will take their snack and drink outside at playtime. • Please send in a drink bottle (not glass) and a suitable snack, e.g. fruit, crisps. Something that they can manage by themselves.

  6. New Routines • Withdrawing groups of children will be part of the daily routine – no need to worry • Government Phonics ‘Screening Test’ will be carried out in the Summer Term. • There will be a dedicated phonics and reading meeting during the first term. • Class change-over day will take place on Friday 18th July. • The children will have the opportunity to experience the year 1 classrooms during the next couple of weeks

What is expected in year 1 The expectations in year 1 are different to reception • There are fewer staff in each class, therefore children work more independently. • Children are encouraged to remain at a task for a longer period of time. • Assessments are only carried out on what the child produces independently.

  8. Y1 Autumn expectations • This child has shown; • Can write own name • Has own ideas • Can sound words out • Letters are formed correctly

  9. End of Y1 expectations • I can write my own name • I can form letters correcly • I can think of ideas to write • My sentences make sense • I can use Fred talk to sound words out • I can spell High Frequency Words (red words) correctly • I can begin to use full stops

Y1 Autumn Numeracy Expectations • To be able to count forwards and backwards to 20. • To know 1 more and 1 less than a given number within 20. • To write numbers up to 20 correctly. • Children develop at different rates and some children will not have achieved this. • You will receive a transition book with ideas to work through during the summer holidays. 14 15 16 ? 18 19 20

HOME READING • The importance of sharing a book with your child is vital • Not just the reading of the words but asking them questions about the text • They will have a reading book weekly and this will be changed on a given day • This book will not be read to the class teacher • We value your comments in their diaries • Opportunities for reading go beyond this book, please expose them to a wide range of books

  16. Guided Reading and Phonic Groups • The children will be set in ability groups for these sessions • Children can move between the groups as they progress or need extra support • This is our focus sessions for reading • We follow the Ruth Miskin phonics – as they did in reception • They will be sent home green words in the first term
