  2. OBJECTIVES • Determine the size of a family room. • State different functions of a family room. • Analyze the décor of a family room.

  3. FUNCTIONS • How is a family room different than a living room??

  4. FUNCTIONS • A living room provides a formal setting/atmosphere. It may only be used by several people at any given time. • A family roomprovides an informal setting specifically for family-centered activities.

  5. LOCATION • A family room should be easily accessible. • It should be located adjacent to the kitchen(can also be adjacent to the dining room or living room). • A family roomshould not be easily visible from the other living areas. Why do you think this is??

  6. LOCATION • A family room can accumulate a lot of materials and clutterfrom family activities, and therefore the room should not be easily visible from other living areas.

  7. SIZE and SHAPE • The size of a family room depends on the equipment needed for activities. • A small family room is approx. 150 sq. feet. • A large family room is approx. 300 sq. feet.

  8. DÉCOR • A family room should have a vibrant atmosphere. • Furniture should be informal (to suit all members of the family). • Floors should be resilient. They should be able to withstand repetitive abuse from family activities.

  9. DÉCOR • Walls should be made from materials such as tile or paneling. • Storage space needed for materials and equipment (cabinets, closets, drawers). • Acoustical ceilings can help reduce noise from spreading to other parts of the house.
