  2. Installation • Unzip toolkit_installation_CD.zip into C:\metadata_toolkit • Use folder names • Double click index.hta to launch menu • Select Metadata Editor

Installation of Archiving Tools • Click Install the Metadata Editor • Use all default settings • The CD-Rom Builder requires version 1.5 of the Java Run-time Environment • If required, click Install Java Runtime • Use all default settings • Click Install the CD-Rom Builder • Use all default settings

  4. Installation of Archiving Tools • The IHSN Tools package requires Microsoft XML 4.0 • Click “Click here to install” • Accept license • Enter name and organization • Click Install Now • Click Install the IHSN Tools • Use all default settings

  5. Installation of Archiving Tools • Click Install Nesstar Explorer • Use all default settings • Click Install IHSN Multilingual Pack • Ensure Metadata Editor and Nesstar Explorer are checked • Click Install

  6. Installation of documentation • Click Toolkit User’s Guide in PDF • This is not working at present • Copy • Docs\UsersGuide*.* • to • C:\Program files\Microdata Management Toolkit\docs • Ignore other options and quit index.hta

  7. Metadata Editor – first time • Open the Metadata Editor • Enter the license key • Found in Nesstar Serial 2009.txt • Select Documentation, Template • (or T from the menu buttons) • Import metadata_toolkit\templates • IHSN Template 1.2.NesstarTemplate • Select IHSN Template 1.2 from the Study Templates • Click Use to use this templates • Select Documentation, Template • Click Resource Description Templates • Import metadata_toolkit\templates • IHSN External Resource Template 1.2.NesstarRDTemplate • Select IHSN External Resource Template 1.2 from the Resource Description Templates • Click Use to use this templates

  8. Modifying the example for your survey • Select My Projects • File, Add New Study (Ctrl-N) • Document description • Study description • Datasets • Variable groups • External resources

Import datasets • Click on Datasets • Add datasets (Ctrl-I) • HH • HL • WM • CH • Add LN variable to HL file (needed for relations) • Insert variable (before HL1) • Name: LN, Label: Line number, Width: 2 • Click on Data Entry • Select Data, and uncheck ‘Write protected’ • Copy all cells of HL1 to LN • Select Data, and check ‘Write protected’

  10. Completing datasets • For each dataset, check key variables and relations • Add LN to HL files list of key variables • For each dataset, click variables, resequence • Validate dataset relations

Import descriptions from generic MICS example • Documentation, Import, from study • Check all boxes, except • variable information • variable definitions • categories • keys and relations • Select Generic MICS 2005 v.0.3 • This imports all of the generic document description, study description, variable groups • Does not import external resources • Save As • MICS\Archive\Generic MICS 2005-2006 v1.0

  12. Import external resources • Add desired folders • Use generic folder names • Export external resources from generic example to Dublin Core • To RDF file • Import external resource from Dublin Core • Select RDF file • Arrange external resources into folders

  13. Update for your survey • Document description • Study description • Dataset description • Key variables and relations • Questionnaire wording • Variable groups • External resources

Tools • Validate metadata • Reviews metadata for required items • Validate external resources • Reviews external resources for required items • Validate dataset relations • Checks key variables and relations between files • Validate variables • Checks certain characteristics of variables • Randomize key variables • DO NOT USE!

  16. Nesstar Explorer • File, Open, select file • Browse documentation • Export data file to other software • Export DDI to XML

  17. CD-Rom Builder • New CD-Rom project • Select Nesstar file • Select MICS branding • Select language, English • Save as MICS.outline • Tools, Export to CD-Rom • Generate to CD • this is a directory for copying to CD later • Check all boxes • Click Finish
