  1. The Conquest of Persia A choose your own adventure story. Click on the shapes to advance or pick an option.

  2. Who are you? The year is 331 B.C.E. You are a member of a scouting party under Alexander the Great during his conquest of Persia.

  3. Trouble Ahead Hide in the nearby bushes and observe? Look over the edge of the ridge? Flank the group and observe from another angle? On a reconnaissance mission you find that a large Persian force is camped over a ridge. Do you…

  4. The Ridge You look over the edge of the ridge and in your haste have silhouetted yourself against the skyline. You are spotted. You never return to your camp. You have failed.

  5. Flank and Observe You flank the group and find a perfect position for seeing without being seen. You are successful in reporting the enemy’s presence.

  6. Hiding in the Bushes You hide in the bushes which provides you a great viewing position. Unfortunately you have chosen the home of a snake as your hiding place. You make your report however two members of your party died in the retrieval of the information

  7. The March Cross at a bridge within 3 hours’ march? Cross at a ford within half a day’s march? Cross where you are? A river separates your army from that of the Persian’s. As the leader of the scouting crew you are called upon to make a decision. Do you?

  8. Crossing at the Ford The ford proves to be a wise choice despite the long walk. The lack of any forms of cargo transport, a trait of the Macedonian army, also makes this an effective choice. It is unguarded and places your army behind the Persian’s.

  9. Cross Where You Are You make the call to cross where you are in the interest of time. However you have underestimated the depth of the river and with each soldier carrying his weapons many drown. You are executed for your decision. You have failed.

  10. Crossing at the Bridge You reach the bridge quickly however it is heavily guarded. The funneling that the bridge causes makes it difficult to overwhelm. The Macedonian army faces heavy casualties but is not finished.

  11. The Battle The Macedonian army suffered too many losses because of your decision. They are narrowly defeated in the battle. You have failed.

  12. The Battle Attempt to run from the battlefield? Drag yourself from the battlefield? Continue fighting and tend to the wound later? The battle is well underway and the army of Alexander the Great has the upper hand thanks to your information. However you have been wounded. Do you…

  13. Drag Yourself Away You drag yourself from the field of battle. It takes time, but you go unnoticed. The battle is won and you make a full recovery.

  14. Fight On You fight on. You realise however that the exertion has cost you your life. You take many of the enemy with you. You die a hero’s death. You have been instrumental in the success of the empire.

  15. Try and Run You make an attempt to run, however you are spotted. The enemy makes short work of you in your injured state. You have failed.
