  1. CXC Manager’s Status Report Chandra Users’ Committee Meeting Roger J. Brissenden 25 January 2005

  2. Topics • Program Level Status • Program Management • Spacecraft • Mission Planning • Science Instruments and Calibration • OCC • Data Processing • CXCDS • CDO • Education and Outreach • Mission Metrics • Chandra Grant Awards CXC Status Report/CUC

  3. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • Program Management • Successfully passed the 5 year milestone on July 23, 2004! • CXC remained within budget for FY04 and expect FY05 costs to track to POP04 plan. HRC, ACIS & HETG PI subcontracts moved under SAO, 1 Oct 04. • Staffing: Martin Elvis resigned as Lead for Science Data System Planning, Jonathon McDowell appointed new Lead with Mike Wise (MIT) as Deputy. • Tom Aldcroft certified as 3rd Chandra Flight Director (replaces Rob Cameron). • Facilities: Draper Labs moving ahead with new Hill building attachment. ~1500 sf floor space to be lost to 7th floor including the conference room and 5 offices. ACIS room to be sacrificed to allow for new conference room to be built. ACIS Equipment has been relocated to the TST room. CXC Status Report/CUC

  7. Proposed7th Floor Modifications CXC Status Report/CUC

  8. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • Spacecraft • Continues to operate extremely well overall • OBC patch for SCS 101 and SCS 31. Modify 101 to contain all CPE patches; modify 31 to call 101 during eclipse ops, 8/23. Improved eclipse safemode transition. • Helium Channel replacement patch, 9/1, for use of HRC anti-coincidence shield data in place of EPHIN as radiation detector. 6 cases of EPHIN rail voltage anomaly due to high temperatures however no indication of performance degradation; plan to budget ~6 rail voltage drops per year. • Conducted ACA dark current calibration 9/9 and 12/24 – shows expected trend in warm pixel increase • Nominal ’04 summer and ’05 winter eclipse seasons, nominal Lunar Eclipse, 11/12 • Radiation events during ’04 eclipse season resulted in contingency commanding and 3 Normal Sun Mode (NSM) recoveries. • Uneventful Leonids passage 11/19 • Anomalies: Propulsion line cooling, EPHIN rail voltage, unexpected NSM transition CXC Status Report/CUC

  9. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • Mission Planning • Thermal heating and constraints starting to impact mission planning • 10 SCS 107 runs due to high radiation events (includes major event last week) • 7 load interrupt TOOs: Date Target Request 07/05/04 AXP 1048-5937 1 day 08/14/04 GRB 040812 3 days 08/31/04 XRF 040825 3 days 09/13/04 GRB 040912 3 days 10/06/04 GRB 041006 3 days 10/06/04 SGR 1806-20 3 days 12/13/04 BL 0520+675 1 day CXC Status Report/CUC

  10. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • Science Instruments and Calibration • Operating extremely well overall • ACIS bakeout decision postponed in Sept due to safety concern over use of abort heaters, and simulation questions over contaminant volatility • HRC anticoincidence shield rates show acceptable correlation with high energy EPHIN channel. Antico rates exceeded proposed threshold for prior radiation safing event during mission, i.e., a safe EPHIN alternative • 2004 Calibration Review held 10/25-10/26 • OCC • Linux Migration initial config. 10/4, test started 12/1, to ops 3-4/05 • DSN unexpected commanding, 9/11 Date Version Change 07/23/04 OFLS 11.0 Linux port 12/06/04 ONLS 3.10.6 Linux port; test fixes 12/06/04 OFLS 11.3 Linux port CXC Status Report/CUC

  11. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • Data Processing • Automatic processing is current; data delivery time averaged <4 days • Planning underway for Re-processing #3 • CXCDS Date Version Change 07/07/04 CIAO 3.1 Tools, data model, infrastructure 11/29/04 CXCDS 7.4 Automated V&V, MTA DB, AGASC 1.6 12/14/04 CXCDS 7.5 Cycle 7 support 12/15/03 CIAO 3.2 Tool updates (e.g., mkacisrmf), bug fixes • CalDB 2.28 released 8/11, 2.29 on 11/29, and 3.0 on 12/15 CXC Status Report/CUC

  12. Program Level Status 6/30/04 – 1/25/05 • GO and Fellows Program, CDO • Cycle 6 stage 2 cost review held 10/20, results sent to observers 11/1 • Cycle 6 EPO review held 10/20, results announced 11/16 • Cycle 7 CfP released on schedule 12/15 • Cycle 8 Fellows review held 1/19 • Other: Galaxies workshop 7/7, Fellows Symposium 10/13 • Education and Public Outreach • 14 Chandra press releases and 7 additional image releases made CXC Status Report/CUC
